Apparantly, Eva Carneiro DOES understand the game, Jose..

None of which proves that she has any particular tactical understanding of football.

Nor does she need any.

The only issue is that she works for a football club who's players (and manager) push gamesmanship to the limits. They specialise in feigning injury and conning referees, so she needs to be "on the ball" in that respect.

Chelsea aren't the ONLY football club who's players indulge in this, granted. But they're certainly at the forefront with their "tactical injuries".

Puts her in an impossible position really. If a player's rolling about very convincingly with a fake injury, how's she supposed to be able to tell? Seeing as how her primary concern as a doctor has to be a duty of care to the player, she has to assume he's not faking the injury. Damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. She should take them to an industrial tribunal for constructive dismissal.

The idea of becoming Mourinho's custard cousin should be plenty to put anyone off...

She was also summoned onto the pitch by the referee, whose authority at a match overrides that of the manager in any case.

I'd assume there is some kind of pre-agreed hidden code between the medical staff and the players to address this problem. If the player is faking it (which, lets face it, will be about 8 times out of 10) then a crafty wink from the "injured" player when Eva arrives would be far too blatant and easy to pick up on camera. Maybe they have to say something.

Costa (grimacing, clutching ankle): "The Russian winter blows coldest when Christopher Biggins forgets his safari hat"
Eva: "Gotcha" (pretends to treat ankle)
