Anyone thinking of giving up smoking?

Im thinking of doing. I have managed it before, but then restarted. This time around its even harder to do.

Just wondered if anyone else is thinking of giving up, and if so have you picked a day / date to give up?

First of all, why do you state that it's "harder to do" this time, when all you are doing is THINKING of doing it?

Answer - basically you are setting the scene up for FAILURE before you even start.

"pick a date"?? What kind of pussy talk is that, and you want someone to hold your hand and fail with you??

You haven't got a f***ing PRAYER.

Running his own business empire suited Carr, as he hated being told what to do. Despite his success - he treated many celebrities over the years, including Richard Branson, Anthony Hopkins and Jerry Hall - he still felt like a failure, he said, as the rest of the world continued to smoke. Not a year went by without a rumour that he had taken up the habit again. In 2001, he sued the DJ Chris Evans for saying so on air on Virgin Radio.

On NSC for over two decades...
I always find that if there isn't any baccy about then I don't smoke - so for me the key thing is not buying any in the first place.

Withdrawal symptoms last about three days, then you get a cold, then a couple of weeks later you feel much better. So well worth it really.

i really am gonna give this a go, you ready adrian?

Fred. Just buy/borrow the book and set a couple of hours aside. You can even smoke while you are reading it. This sounds bizarre but it his part of his method.

By the time you have finished reading the book you will be cured. Mate, I'm not a receiver of swollen goods or anything like that but if Allen Carr was alive today I would blow him off as a token of appreciation. That is how grateful I am to the old codger for ridding me of such an awful addiction.

Go for it FO.

Do you have any proof that he started smoking again, Nibble?

Not that it is relevant anyway. He helped me and God knows how many others stop and that will do for me. It worked for everyone I know. There is nothing to lose from reading this book.

I agree. I know it helps a lot of people.

i gave up 10 months ago and only rarely want one now

i gave up by going to the clinic at my local docs (newtons in haywards heath). saw a lovely nurse there once a week who gives you loads of advice and really makes you feel good about yourself for giving up . she will also give you anything you want on prescription . i had nasal spray patches champix zyban and gum (not at the same time ha ha) until we found a way that was good for me. everyone is different.
i have given up about 5 times before and was on 30 a day. this time i think ive finally cracked it

but as someone said NEVER NEVER just have one. this is particularly dangerous when you think youve cracked it after about 6 months and you just wanna see what its like. DONT do it you will smoke again,

you have to tell yourself thats it never again.

another thing, you feel better breathe better , have more energy , you dont stink, and you reduce your risk of dying.

its a no brainer

best of luck you can all do it. if i can anyone can believe me

are you saying i shouldn't start untill i have the book, i feel really up for this so i am gonna see how long i can go today before i want one, i expect when i have a drink tonight i will.

I am quitting soon but haven't set a date. Need to work out what my triggers are and how to sidestep them first.

You should start by breaking a single fag in pieces, then screw up a pack with several in it.
INVEST in quitting - fags are not an investment, you set fire to them! and the time taken to smoke one is no more "relaxing" or "a break" than if you stood down and had no fag at all.
Practice thinking about something OTHER than fags when you take a break, as you repeat your desire to yourself (and out loud to others ??? ) and that just stands as confirm/affirmation of your addiction. Face it, even if you got admonished ("that's a bad habit you ought to quit"), or agreement ("me too, I'm dying for a fag") from others, you will categorize their response (for/against) and still 'vote for the smoker party'.

Smokers who are "dying for a cigerette";- yes, yes you are.

You prefer 'there there, it's alright if you fail mummy still loves you".
And you can fail with a mate - how nice, bonding and EVERYTHING.

(PSSST go to the drawer and destroy the pack. INVEST in quitting ffs)

Fred you can smoke WHILE you read the book but obviously it's better if you dont. My wife just happened to borrow it from our local library one day and plonked it in front of me. I didn't smoke while I read but don't think it makes a difference.

Never been a smoker so I do not know what it is like to try and stop and are the withdrawal symptoms that bad or is it an excuse to start again?

I was told that nicotene is used as a pesticide by organic gardeners, and people smoke it:shootself

Good going.
I quit 29 years ago. My lungs WERE damaged during the 8 years I smoked, and I did suffer repercussions that took many years to dissipate. I also had social habits left over, like chewing toothpicks and wooden coffee-stirrers etc. Maybe the desire to nibble on food when bored, is also a leftover from smoking.

Don't misunderstand- I can be around smokers, not bothered when they light up (as long as it's not in my car, or in my house, when I'm eating, or when I'm in a place that has rules of no smoking), and I don't even try to talk them out of it - unless they express a desire to quit. Then it's time to get serious, and not be playing around with weak attempts to quit which they set up to fail, and cutting down (that's the WORST, it just places a greater value on each fag).

Quitting is a FOREVER thing - not a period you feel like going through to show anybody anything.

Hey, by the way it's Autumn.
You have the wonderful opportunity to sweep fallen leaves into a great pile, and set fire to them.
Now, you smokers - stand over the pile of burning leaves and inhale the smoke. Go on, you want to breathe in the burning leaves.
No?

You already do.

I gave up 28 days ago using Zyban. I have hardly had any cravings whatsoever. My wife, however, who gave up the same day is really struggling but has not given in yet. Allen Carrs book is good, as is Zyban, but at the end of the day if you do not want to give up, you wont. There is no easy solution.

What Allen Carr will tell you is that smokers will make up anything to justify smoking. To give up, you have to tell yourself that having a cig will not do you any good whatsoever - cigs do not relax you - they actually increase stress. Another method is to tell yourself that you can have a fag in 15 minutes - by then the craving will be gone and you wont have one.

Giving up with someone else helps - my wife would have started again weeks ago if I had not stopped at the same time.

Go for it.

thats oral fixation. we have that from childhood and many people who have never smoked do these things, chewing on pens, chewing gum or hair, biting nails etc.

Ok anyone that wants to give up. Who is strong enough to set a date on NSC and give up all together? We can then see how we are all doing?

Doing it as a group may help.

Patches, Gum, Zyban, inhalators are all allowed.

Do you think we would be allowed to set up a new forum for giving up?
