I thought this was going to be a Bill Hicks quote.

"Kill yourself, no really, it's not a joke. Kill yourself"

I have worked for a marketing and branding company - although as a designer, rather than in brand creation or market positioning.

Marketing people are, on the whole, bloody expensive. I can't recommend anyone off the top of my head, although a lot of marketing is, by and large, common sense. However, picking up from what people I've worked with say, I would say think of the simple things first - identify who you want to appeal to, be clear and concise in what you want to say and how you want it to come over.

That pretty much covers it.

Regarding copy, rather than paying a copy writer, have a go at it and then get a couple of people to proof it and suggest changes, pretty much what I do with it (although copy is the part of marketing I dislike).

Thanks for everyone who replied both by thread and pm.

Trying to get a website homepage made more simple and more appealing really by using the the best words and not ramble on like i do.

It's a copywriter you want then (or at least someone with copywriting experience). If SEO is important for your site (i.e. as good a Google listing as poss) then you need to speak with a company that specialises in SEO. They will almost certainly be able to help you write it too - in association with the text requirements for optimisation.
There are some real good companies with proven records in SEO out there, there's also a load of rubbish too so beware.
