Amazing... honestly, one of my favourite places in Europe. Lovely horseshoe bay, great places to eat, (extremely) friendly locals and some brilliant bars. Chilled out and not touristy either!

Haven't been for a good seven or eight years but I loved the place.

It's quite posh by Spanish standards - certainly more moneyed than other big cities. The old town area is a paradise for eating and drinking.

A beautiful beach and bay - but the weather doesn't always play ball.

Going back in September and I can't wait! I'm sure you'd have a great time there.

Back in 82, spent a few weeks there, it was the base for a lot of England fans for the World Cup.

A nice Basque fellow, in a shop, gave me loads of perfume samples, because I learned to say thank you in Basque in preference to Spanish.

Nice place, the bay with its island is good.

What are the prices like? Is it an expensive place to eat/drink compared to other Spanish cities?

Great place, well it was in 1982 when we stayed there for the first stage of the World Cup.

Great beach and bars etc.

No idea on prices now - that was 30 years ago!

Also, can't seem to find flights very easy. How do you GET there?

Fly to Nice and then take thetrain. Lovely journey all along the coast

Great bay. Good beach, the bombings have now stopped haven't they? Was a problem when I went in 1987

I went there about 5 weeks ago. The beachfront zones all fancy and attractive, but head up into Egia, where you have to walk through an underpass to find access to, and you'll find the cooler, more affordable and grubbier places. A really nice city overall, with its artworks and fun in a funicular and glorious sea-views, but up in Egia you get a glass of wine for 30p and a big veggie meal for about £6 and large banners on some of the walls begging for the release of some Eta prisoners.
Flew to Bilbao and got a coach for about a tenner to San Sebastian, driving through the grassy hills all the way.

Fiercely hot! We absolutely fried out on the island in the bay during the day.

Spent some time there when holidaying along the coast in St. Jean de Luz, near Biarritz, in France. As said really hot there at times. My daughter asked for a coca cola when we were sitting at a pavement cafe and when the waiter put it on the table the cold in the glass v the air heat made the whole thing explode with glass and cola flying everywhere.

Thought it was a great city with beautiful bay setting etc.. Will visit again sometime.

What a well-timed thread as I was planning a visit after seeing San Sebastian on that food programme with the two old Italian geezers...

Is a place to go for a long weekend or longer?
