In which case at what point does it cease to be a set piece, and start open play again? Once it's in play, it's in play.

Scoring direct from a penalty or, arguably, a free kick would not be open play, clearly, but for my money, once you take a corner, it's anybody's ball. By your logic, a team who take a corner (or a throw in, for argument's sake) short, ping it around neatly between eight different players for a couple of minutes without the opposition getting close to the ball, and then stroke it into the bottom corner, haven't scored from open play. Not only that, but every phase of the game starts with some kind of stoppage, so where do you draw a line?

I consulted the Oracle

Set piece (football)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The term set piece or set play is used in association football and rugby to refer to a situation when the ball is returned to open play following a stoppage, particularly in a forward area of the pitch. Most often, the term is used to refer to free kicks and corners, but sometimes throw-ins. Many goals result from such positions, whether scored directly or indirectly. Thus defending set pieces is an important skill for defenders, and attacking players spend much time practising them; set pieces are one area where tactics and routines can be worked out in training in advance of matches. Some players (such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Aleksandar Kolarov, David Beckham, Charlie Adam, Alessandro del Piero, Juninho, Robin Van Persie, Ronaldinho, Andrea Pirlo and Wesley Sneijder) specialise in set pieces.

Edit: Just remembered that Zidane nodded both goals with the first touch of the incoming corner, which is I would argue not open play. Like you say, if it had been touched by a few players and moved about a bit, then it probably could be called open play

Celtic v Leeds Utd, European Cup semi-final, played at Hampden Park, April1970.
The Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt match also at Hampden Park was in front of 135,000! Forgive me for being an anorak!

I'm an anaorak too :lolol: I've got a video of the 1960 final, all in B/W obviously, and there is a little gap in the recording where they had to change the film in the ONE cine camera they were using :lolol:
