Am taking my mum for her 40th birthday this november and wanna know any hot spots to go to etc etc

how much £££ are you spending? a helicopter ride could be fun,
and there are plenty of theatres, stores, bars etc to try out.

madison square garden have regular shows most nights,
you can buy on the same day... central park (daytime only!)
though would pass on the boat 'tour' around manhattan island- gets a bit boring after a while...

Nice place, I went last year. Empire State Building is a must, as is Central Park. Loads of top bars and restaurants.

I've worked in travel for the last 8 years and have had the good fortune to go to NYC twice.

One thing I got wrong first time around when I took my Mum there is that it's not all about Broadway and Central Park. Further down you've got areas like Greenwich Village where there's a pretty good but bizarre restaurant called Jekyll & Hyde for something a little different. It's on 91 Seventh Avenue South but they've also just opened another one in midtown on 1409 Sixth Avenue on 57th Street.

Another good restaurant is the revolving rooftop one on the 47th Floor of the Marriott Marquis Hotel on Broadway. I've been up there but unless you book you may not get a table and it's also a trousers/shirt restaurant. The views are probably worth it though.

November is a pretty good time to go too - you've got the NYC marathon on the 2nd and Thanksgiving on Thurs 27th when all the Yanks go to town. Oh, and at the very end I think they start turning on all the Christmas lights which is meant to be pretty impressive.

Anyway, I feel like a bloody walking New York tourist guide but I hope this helps....have a good time mate.

plenty of that you would imagine, but pubs are scarily few and far between - in the centre, round fifth ave down from times square, it all seems to be expensive restaurants and boutique hotels. it can be nightmarishly expensive. as it says above, get out to the cool districts like greenwich village and hells kitchen, it can be a good old laugh there. tis a fine place though!

Great place - you'll be hard pushed to find stuff not to do!

2 things - dont bother with the stock exchange (although the wall street area is pretty good). And I always regretted not going thru the greenwich area - tis supposed to be very good.

Greewhich village is well good, go there for sure. Also head for Prospect Park in Brooklyn, much better than Central Park but a bit of a why out on the D train but you can get some proper good pizza while you're out there.

Don't do Ellis Island - unelss you are a US citizen with immigrant ancestors, it's over two hours of boredom and a waste of limited time.


Do do the Bus tour - Gray Line I think - Red open top "london style" buses ! You can buy a 2-day ticket which will enable you to do a downtown (liberty, ground zero, etc.) plus an uptown (central park etc) on different days plus a nighttime (harlem, bronz etc.)


Do take in a broadway show. Yes they are expensive c. $100 for decent seats but they are a great spectacle.

Pick a show not yet launched in the UK as tickets are more expensive than London;s west end so you want some exclusivity (I saw Thoroughly modern millie a year before it's west end launch)


Even if you are not a fan, Do try and take in a New York Jazz Club one evening - just for the experience . Charlie Parker's Birdland is one of the best and it's centrally located in the theatreland/times square area

I am flying there tomorrow morning for a friend's wedding - should be fun. Cheap flights and mixing it with the locals, good times.

It is a fantastic city with so much to see and do that it is impossible to list. Get a good guide book from Waterstones or whoever - the Insight guide is excellent.

One thing you won't find in the guide book - go to Ground Zero, find Robert Eaton's name on the plaque with the list of victims and have a silent moment paying your respects.

safer?! i just got back from NYC and having spent the time there on my photography walking the length of manhetten in the middle of the night i have to say ive never felt safer.

sorry! edited to actually make the point i intended, that as i was walking around on my own in the middle of the night i was carrying a lot of incredibly expensive camera gear and still didnt feel threatened. as long as your safe and sensible its no more unsafe than brighton, etc.

Fair point, I haven't been there pre Juliani and I know that NYC is safer than LOndon, that's a fact. Trouble is, I can wander round the 'rough areas' of Georgia and Tennessee safe in the knowledge that I won't be bothered. (Still, my legally purchased .38 and my taser and pepper spray do give me a bit more assurance !)

If you want to take your mum somewhere take here to Cambodia, Ankor wat, Killing fields, Pol Pot, S21, Now that is history and will open her eyes to what really goes on in the big bad world.
