Firstly, i'm not one for asking the usual "I'm going to france on holiday, what should I do?", however I am CLUELESS on this.

Basically trying to sell a guitar I bought on a whim and wondering if anyone knows shops who would buy a second hand instrument? If so, did you find you got good value for it or does the price fall of the cliff if you go that route?

I'm currently going down the route of trying to sell it on but would be curious to see what a shop would be willing to give me. However I have a poor knowledge of music shops and cant find any examples on google.

Boring questions. Boring thread. Very sorry.

The Guitar and Amp shop in the Lanes would purchase it I think, but I'm reliably informed they're a bit cheeky with pricings so you may not get a good deal.

Boring and unhelpful reply, I can only apologise and hope I don't get banned. :dunce:

Ah interesting. I had a look on their site but couldn't see a selling part but may be worth a ring.

My fear is they will ask me a QUESTION about the guitar.

"Ummm...its red....ummm...it's right handed". That's about the extent of my knowledge.

Is that little guitar shop still there by the viaduct on London rd just before Preston Park? If so he used to put things in the shop for a small consideration and that way you make more cash.

Secondhand shops generally pay a third to a half of what they think they can get for it.
Out of interest what is the make?

Guitar and Amp will only purchase it if it's a valuable high-end / interesting guitar in good condition, I don't think they'd be intereted in a commond or garden guitar.

Best bet if probably selling it yourself online unless in a hurry.

A lot of music shops will sell an instrument for you, at the price you want,.. some ask for a small commission, others just do it to maintain a throughput in the shop, ie if people know they act a reseller, they are inclined to visit and buy more regularly.

We have bought and sold guitars and clarinets through a local shop down here.

It's an Aria STG guitar.

It was very much a beginners guitar but in new condition as I hardly picked the thing up! Have a 'Rockbag' by Warwick with it also.

Because it's nothing special I assumed shops may just turn me away.

Thanks for the advice so far everyone. Very helpful.

I did this not so long ago mate. Shops hardly offered me anything on an acoustic guitar that was £500 new so I sold it privately and got A LOT more than I was offered by any shop.

More of a hassel though admittedly. Just whack it on eBay with 'local pickup only' and see how you go!

I wouldn't go to GAK as they can take the piss a bit. Brighton Guitars in Sydney Street might be a good bet. They bought a banjo off me that i never learnt to play for £80 which was only £30 less than I originally paid for it. However worth remembering any music shop will offer more "store credit" than they will cash. Failing that type the make and model into google, copy and paste the description and flog it on eBay. Jobs a gooden

Got a baby grand piano that belongs to my (sort of) mother in law, been trying to find a home for it for ages then my brother decides he wants it for his daughters to learn to play. That generated no interest at all presumably 'cos it's a bit big and heavy to move. 2 specialist shops near where she lives in Leicester couldn't be bothered to even look at it or value it.

Stick it on Brighton Gumtree, totally free.

This is the easiest route -- best to put it on with a picture. Have sold a fair amount of stuff from Iphones to instruments and furniture that way. Watch out for scammers though (e.g. anyone who mentions wanting to pay you through Western Union).

Oh ok. Thanks.

I've chucked it on there and on NSC very own classified and the Friday Ad.

Unfortunately it didn't sell above my reserve the first time i did it on ebay which is why I'm looking to spread the net somewhat and seeing if shops were a potential option. I imagine ill get it back on ebay again, I'm just need keen on paying a fee again.

Everyone's advice has been very helpful though.

I have never felt that offering my instrument for sale would elicit much by way of bids.

Indeed when I have offered the opportunity to blow my trumpet for free it has rarely brought any response.
