Oh right. Well I just called Vodafone to ask them about it and the bloke told me that it's because my sim card is now too old! Apparantly I have to go in store and get a new one. Until then I have no phone!!!

Have you tried selecting network provider in settings?

Reason I ask is that my girlfriend and I are on Vodafone. A few months ago she couldn't text or call and when she rang them they told her that her sim was too old and to go into the shop for a new one.

In the end she got the new sim but after a few days the same thing started happening again so she rang them up and they told her to send the phone to them. Stupidly she did and they then lost her phone and didn't get it back for ages.

Anyway, soon affterwards my phone suddenly started playing up exactly the same way and when I rang them I was lucky to get the one Vodafone employee with any sense and he talked me through what to do. It turned out that all my girlfriend really needed to do was to select network provider like I did and her phone would've been ok. She didn't actually need a new sim at all.

Thanks for that mate. Very interesting because I got the distinct impression I was being fobbed off on the phone. I will have a look at the phone, but if I can't sort it then I will go in store and get them to sort it.

This is what I did...Go to settings and then connectivity to find "Network" (might be somewhere else in our phone)...Once in network set operator selection to Manual and let it search for networks.

Once you have a list of networks set it to T-Mobile...it should try and request it but not be able to set it. Once you're back at networks select Vodafone this time and it will re-set your phone to Vodafone. (I'm not sure why you need to try and set it to another network but that's what I was told to do!)

It might not work in your case but did the trick for me and my girlfriend. The options might be in different places on your phone but if you can get to where it gives you the network options its worth trying it just in case!

 Top man!

Just done it, and it appears to be working again. Hopefully that will do the trick for good now. Have you ever had to repeat that process after doing it the first time?

Hooray!!!! I'm the least technically minded idiot there is so really struck it lucky getting the one Vodafone guy with the knowledge and I'm happy to pass it on!

I think I've had to do it once since then so thats twice in total in about 8 months. The second time I did it I kept getting "network busy" when my girlfriend was next to me and able to use the network! Luckily I made a mental note of what to do and it worked!

. Just as a matter of interest, how old is too old? Only asking because my sim must be about 10 years old now, and any problems have been very rare, only about 2 or 3 and have soon sorted themselves out.

Well I must have had mine for over 5 years. And it has been transferred through about 4 phones. It was originally for a PAYG phone, but I recently had it changed to pay monthly.

We had both had our sims about 5 or 6 years and we both called with the same problem but because we got 2 different people on our calls to them we got 2 different reasons and solutions. Had no end of grief trying to track her lost phone down and had to get quite nasty with them...and then turns out it wasn't the sim after all!

I'm still using my original sim and that trick still works, shes on her new sim and uses the trick everytime the network is allegedly busy.

Just wish there was proper training at Vodafone...you and I now know more about problem solving than their own staff do!
