My Mum has Tiscali. WOn't have by the end of the month.

Terrible. I urge anyone thinking about using it, to not.

i have big issues with Tiscali.. stopped billing my credit card last year, when it expired- first i knew about it was some stroppy 'pre legal' letter from a debt collection agency!

the card was ok, just updated with new expiry date, and was switched back on again same day...

they then wrote chasing momey for a previous account i had with the, and (i thought) was closed down, all clear, due to service password being hacked...) many calls emails to Mr Jobsworth got that sorted..

now they send me a snotty letter about overdue monthly payments, (on the 'free dialup' anytime service) even though i had closed and changed to a idfferent ISP altogether, because of the fuss.

clear notice was given to them, so they can go swivel for all i care..!

Has anyone been having trouble getting a dial tone with Tiscali recently? Its been taking me up to half an hour for the last week or so.

Tiscali are utter SHIT, I couldn't recommend a company less. We've been with them for 3-4 months now and I don't think we've had a single week pass without there being a problem.

Tiscali are good, their home / business services are shit. [Selling ADSL is a miniscule part of Tiscalis business plan]

I'm amazed to see all this criticism of Tiscali.

I've never once experienced any of the slowdown that seems to have plagued others over the last few weeks (according to this topic), and I generally couldn't be happier with the service.

Find Tiscali ok,can be slow when you would expect it to be. i/e many user's. Just remember Tiscali are doing a big sign-up push and that wont help those that already use the provider. Downside for me is the Tech call centre. India. :( :albion:

Me too. Can't knock them. Have their 24/7 phone package as well, and no problems. Did have the same problem with credit card expiry that someone else had.

ADSL works on a contended ratio kind of way.

Basically if you are on a 'pipe' with lots of people downloading alot, it will slow it down for everyone. Generally speaking you get upto 50 users on 1 'pipe' on ADSL.

And theres more than enough capacity on the internet for alot more users so i wouldnt worry about it slowing down any time soon.

a good read on contention there.

Basically if you have an "upto 8mb" line you can share that with upto 25/50 users. generally speaking most of the time its not a problem unless someone is 24x7 downloading.

I'm a Tiscali broadband user and I've had problems connecting at all times of the day over the last month. Having been unable to connect for over an hour, I rang the Tiscali technical help line yesterday and described the problem I was getting i.e. no dial tone, could not connect to remote site etc.

Tiscali's solution? They advised me to unplug my modem from the base unit, leave it out for 15 secs and then plug it in again! It seems that my connection needed to be refreshed. I'm not technically minded enough to know whether this was bull**** or not but it certainly solved the problem in 10 mins. And I got to know how the weather was in Bombay as an extra. So, all in all, a successful call.

probably a stale session or something, always try stuff like that before ringing. if it still doesnt work and you ring them and they're talking shit - be firm and pretend you know what you are talking about
