Me and Mrs ELS are embarking on a mini roadtrip up to Alness, just north of Inverness, at the end of August, and we're trying to work out the most scenic route there from Cumbria.

I reckon a quick trip up to Glasgow, then a ride up the A82, through Glen Coe, Loch Lomond and Loch Ness to Inverness. But, this road has apparently been voted Britain's Most Dangerous Road, with more deaths per 100 miles than any other road

Has anyone been on it?! And if so, are the views worth dying for?!

Not sure about dying for but yes, it's very scenic. There is also somuch less traffic as you drive around most of Scotland. It makes it a real joy to drive, especially just after a downpour - everything looks so green.

The bit from Tyndrum across to Fort William through the Bridge of Orchy and across Rannoch Moor is the best bit. Alongside Loch Ness you tend to be in mainly woodland so apart from the nice views across Loch Ness it's not so nice. Like Jeep says come back down the A9 and stop at Aviemore and head out to Cairngorm. Theres a railway to the top (halfway anyway!) with some stunning views if its clear.

While your as far up as Inverness though take a day to drive round the top of Scotland, across to Ullapool, up round past Scourie, up to the top by Durness across to Tongue and then down the A836 to Lairg (don't bother going across to Thurso), then to Bonar Bridge and pick up the A9 at Tain. The best drive anywhere in this country.

Back to your point though, the A82 can be a bit tricky, just take your time and try and avoid all the idiots overtaking the lorries.

Ah ha! We were thinking of coming back down the A9, top stuff, thanks! Sadly, it's only a really quick visit, so won't have time to take in Ullapool et al, but am really looking forward to the A82.

make sure that before you come back down the a9 you have a full tank of juice as there is nothing but mountains all the way down.
