Trying to organise a weekend out in Germany and hope to watch a game and as luck would have it Schalke are playing Munich on the chosen weekend so thought I would ask the fountain of knowledge that is NSC for advice on getting tickets etc

Read on the stadium website that alcohol is prohibited, is that just a poor translation? Thought everyone had a beer or two on the terraces

I have, but at their old Post Stadion, the predecessor to "Auf Schalke". It is quite normal for beer to be sold at German games, but sometimes it's quite low alcohol.

One thing, hope you're OK getting tickets! "Auf Schalke"'s big, but it is like turning up at Arsenal and Man Utd and expecting to easily get in! You'll find the atmosphere at German games is brilliant though.

I don't know anything about the area of Gelsenkirchen it's in, the old one was in the middle of nowhere and a very open unloved bowl, so it'll be better now. Gelsenkirchen is a mining town too, so not very picturesque. But, you might even manage another game in the weekend. When I've been to the Ruhr, it's normally been possible to see two or three games in a weekend - Friday night and Sunday too. You have... Cologne, Leverkusen, Bochum, Dortmund, MSV Duisburg, even Moenchegladbach, all pretty close.

Oh and as a side point, Dortmund tend to have a slight association with Celtic, so Schalke 04 ("nul vier") do with Rangers...

Saw Schalke 04 v Bayer Leverkusen last year and it was unbelievable. Personally I would recommend getting tickets well in advance as they usually sell out even when they are doing badly in the League, so expect a fixture with Munich to be very popular. That said - we managed to secure 10 tickets from touts outside for about 5 euros over face value which we were happy with. Atmosphere on that terrace is second to none, at one point it was physically bouncing. As hosts Schalke fans are top draw as well, after the game spent much of the night in a traditional German boozer with about 50 of em making all kinds of noise and rowdiness. Would have had the Police nosing around instantly had it been in the UK. Had a great time teaching the Schalke lot Brighton songs and vice-versa.

A few months ago I went over for the weekend.

I saw Monchengladbach against Kaiserslautern on the Friday, Dortmund against Mainz on the Saturday, and Leverkusen v Schalke on the Sunday.

We had an incredible time.

Stadium is superb, atmosphere great, unfortunately i saw a dismal England display(nothing new there)against portugal in world cup which somewhat spoilt the occasion.Go for it i say,Germans were also very friendly.
