I went in 1992. It was wonderful! Beautiful Sandy Beaches, fantastic food and scenary, all as cheap as anything.

I believe it may have become a little more commercialised since then, but probably still well worth a visit.

Halong Bay and Hanoi are fabulous places, Ho Chi Minh a little too manic for my liking.

I went about 6 years ago. Hanoi is one of the best cities i've visited mostly for the accomodating people it was a very humbling experience and the food was great. Like Nobby said I also though Ho Chi Minh was mental and a lot of Americans there shagging vietnamese hookers which really pissed us off, worth a visit though, sopme decent night life and cheap beer. I think its going to be even more touristy now, even back then you travelled mostly between towns on organised tourist buses. When I was there we had a lot of problems with flooding so where we went was restricted, though there are a lot of places worth a visit - some great scenery in the hills, somewhere called Da Lat (sp?) had loads of waterfalls nearby accessable by moped

I went last year and it was brilliant. Climbing through those rat holes and under ground bunkers and tunnels and seeing how they dug them and set up booby traps, etc. was truly fascinating.
