The Grub and I have booked tickets to take her brother, Herbdoctor1, to a game in Mönchengladbach for his birthday later this month. We're currently researching what to do whilst not at the game and where to stay while we're there. Have any of the good people of NSC ever been to this town and thus got any tips to aid our research? All contributions gratefully received. I thank you.

Just been there once - about 5 years ago. Drove down for the day from Frankfurt so didn't sample any of the nightlife. It's quite small and I don't remember any real features of interest. It was a British army town as I believe the BAOR was based nearby - not sure if it still is.

Didn't they shoot Auf Wiedersehn Pet there?

are you sure you want to stay in munchengladbach? there is a castle there but not too much else if i remember rightly.

dusseldorf is only 25 mins away on the train and much better for things to do, places to eat/drink, stay, shopping etc.

I can confidently confirm there is a train station there. I've stood on the platform several times, changing trains between here and Cologne.

Never stepped outside it though.

I lived there when I was very little, but I imagine it has changed a bit now, 42 years later, they used to have trams in the street (whereelse would you have trams, dur?)

Lived there years ago as my father was in the army but spent most of my time around the army barracks as the whole place was set up like little England, I don't remember the town being anything special though

I also saw my 1st ever live football match - MG vs Arsenal in a pre season friendly, it was rubbish as was the ground but this was a long time ago and I can't imagine the stadium is still like a big Withdean, which I seem to remember it was at the time.

They moved to a new ground in 2004 - Borussia Park. It looks rather good.

Sounds like we're not going to be having a wild time there, though. At least we're only there for a day!

Ahh memories of the Bokelberg stadion. Went and saw BMG play Hamburg in the eighties (85 I think) when a certain M.McGhee was leading the line for Hamburg.

Now these were terraces.........

Used to visit Gladbach on a reagular basis back in the 80's as I was stationed close yes you have the alternatives of Dusseldorf, Cologne etc but we always found Gladbach good for a night out. A relatively small and compact city there was a street nicknamed "street of a thousand bars" which although not 1000 did have a health array of evenings entertainment and drinking establishments. Basically follow the main paved road up the hill to the top and then cross over the square and head how the hill.
Often went to the old Gladbach ground - had some good afternoons bit like a British ground, German holigans were hilarious real handbags at dawn. Depends what you want to get up to really but there is plenty in the local area if you want to travel out of the city.
