anybody own a wormery?

I got something about two years ago called a 'can-o-worms'. Different to yours in as much that I have three seperate trays that you add as the worms munch through the stuff which allows you to get the compost easier.
It's nowhere near as fast as the advertising leads you to believe but good anyway. And that tap at the bottom is for draining off the liquid. Don't throw it away as apparently it's as good as baby bio and you can dilute it 1-10 and people buy that shit for about €4.50 a litre. It's true I've seen it

I have the one in the picture and have been wormering for many years now,
though the can o worms is the dogs for effectiveness and simplicity,
if anyone lives in Tower Hamlets you're council are doing some amazing bargains on them.

It's a bin full of worms that you put your waste foodstuff into instead of throwing it away with your rubbish and into landfill. The worms eat the food and give you compost.
We've got one - not as good as all the hype but pretty good...
They get slimy pretty easily so you have to watch what you put in....Ours is a breeding ground for fruitfly too - so every time you take the lid off you get a swarm around you...but I've just empitied it out and started again and it seems to have solved that...
They don't like onions or too much citrus but loads of veg peelings and newspaper, crushed dried egg shells and cardboard....we;ve not had much liquid out the bottom yet though and we've had it for quite a few months...

I just have a standard compost bin, have been filling it since late last year, hope to have some nice compost to dig into my veg patch in the spring. Chuck all veg peelings, grass clippings etc, do have the same problem as tede...face full of fruit flies when I take the lid off.
Yep we've got a composter too, also a digester, but have to say the good old composter is the best of the lot!!

Have just been out to chuck the off-cuts from tonights tea in the compost bin...and I did get a face full of flies...

We've been composting for the last six weeks and everything we chuck in seems to disappear. Do the face flies eat the whole lot.?

The wormery I had gave off so much liquid and it reeked of ammonia...and was full of fruit flies too. Also, I used to keep it outside my front door and I think the postie was nosey 'cos the lid was crooked and the frigging worms were everywhere.
I have been reliably informed that you can open the lid and spray fly spray in there to kill them, but you can't use the compost for 6 months afterwards (composter only not wormery)....I must say it is a bit annoying but if you turn the compost over regularly and a good layer of porridge oats everynow and then (or grass clippings) and they seem to disapate so I haven't resorted to fly spray yet...
Sounds like it didn't have enough paper/cardboard in it....egg boxes and LOADS of them should sort that out!!

but don't spray the flies. Fruit flies are paRT OF THE COMPOSTING,IF YOU HAVE TOO MANY, THEN THE COMPOsT/WORMERY IS TOO WET, YOU NEED MORE SHREDDED PAPER/ CARDBOARD and limestone. i HAVE JUST PICKED UP A GREAT WORMERY/COMPOSTING BOOK FROM hACKNEY COUNCIL. And as a result.
i HAVE JUST COMPLETELY ADJUSTED MY COMPOStING METHODs, IT IS FAR MORE EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE NOW. I am balancing the carbon and nitrogen input. That is paper/cupboard and kitchen waste and realised I was treating my wormery like a compost bin.
I am planning sn, to empty the wormery out into the borders and starting again, treating the old worms with tit bits until the colony starts growing.
I have had gallons of juice but as I said earlier the can o worms system, makes worming easy and you are able to utilise the compost right away.
