Hi all

I've really hurt my calf.

Has anyone done this before? I mean badly?

I was at work today and hurt myself lifting something at a funny angle and was using my leg as leverage and it literally went "pop".

My colleague who was about 3m away heard it and turned around to see me grimacing in agony.

It felt like a snap/twang and felt like I'd been shot in the back of my leg.

This was about 6 hours ago. Now it feels like someone has stabbed me with a hot poker and left it in there and I can barely put any weight on my leg at all without it giving way.

Driving home has been eventful keeping my foot up on the accelerator.

What could I have done? What do I do?

There's probably a few who will just say man up or other shite but I've just sat down with an ice pack and just keep saying FFS over and over in my head because it really bloomin' hurts 🤕

Ok own up, which Brighton player are you ? 🤣

Genuinely, I would go tonight if you can - otherwise you'll be in for a very uncomfortable night, and the sooner you are properly assessed the better.

The UTC / minor injuries is not an A&E. The entire point of them, is to be an alternative to A&E, leaving them to deal with the more urgent / traumatic cases. Your situation is EXACTLY what they are designed for.

I used the one in Southampton when I turned my ankle this time last year - after, like you, thinking I'd take a painkiller and get on with it. They told me I was totally right to come in - they x-rayed it there and then, fitted me with a surgical boot, gave me crutches, prescribed some suitable strong painkillers - and booked me into the system for follow up care.

I can't tonight now. Drank too much and Mrs Spongy can't drive as we have a young'un who has miraculously fallen asleep on request and there's no way I'm going to risk waking her now otherwise literally everyone's night is going to be ruined.

Honestly, Thankyou for the advice. I have to be up at 5am so if it's still really bad I'll head over to Lewes and see what they say. Then I can do whatever I need to from then on.

I tore mine (gastro) desperately stretching to keep the ball in, in the 89th minute of a cup final, 15 years ago. I thought it was cramp at the time, given the situation - muscles stretched and under stress at the end of a hard game. It wasn't - and my team-mates' ham-fisted attempts to stretch it out were very much not helpful

The good news, is that the ball I managed to hook across, was turned home to make it 3-3, taking the final to extra-time.

The bad news is, that I then watched us lose 5-4 AET.

The worse news (sorry @spongy ) is that my left calf STILL gives me trouble, 15 years later! I can only run / jog on it if I wear a compression support.
I did mine going for a catch (a simple one at mid-off, just had to jog in a few paces). Oppo were 9 down and there were 2 overs left. I dropped the ball, obviously, and we didn’t get the final wicket so the game was a draw. Oh, and Adam was bowling 🤣🤣🤣

They are the exact symptoms I had about 6 years ago with a torn meniscus. Possibly that?

edit: probably not if it’s your calf rather than your knee. Apologies and hope it feels better soon.

I ruptured my plantaris muscle a few years ago, it went pop, that’s the muscle that is in between and behind the two parts of your calf muscle. Leg swole up so big I couldn’t put trousers on, and couldn’t bend my foot at all or put any weight on it. Had a number of scans over the following 3 or 4 weeks to check for DVTs, after 5 weeks the swelling hadn’t gone down so under local anaesthetic they stuck a huge needle in and drew the blood out, about half a pint of it, that gave almost instant relief. There was no reason for it, no cause, it’s just something that can ‘happen’.

Real downside is that I’d just started a holiday in Sydney, I ended up sat in my friends third floor apartment with my leg up for 5 weeks as the doctor forbade me from flying until the swelling was gone. The ashes started while I was there, so watched England get humped for the first three tests, and had to put up with Aussie TVs analysis of it. I even missed Australia v Honduras in a WC playoff when Matty Ryan was playing. All in all it was a thoroughly painful and depressing time.

Sounds like a torn calf muscle. I did mine some years ago demonstrating to my (adult) son how to pogo to Anarchy in the UK.
My doctor friend ( one of the club doctors at LCFC) says RICE
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
So, lie down, wrap a large bandage or similar round it tightly with ice inside and prop the leg up in the air.

It's RICED with the D bring diagnosis.

Muscle tears are graded. 1 is sprain or small tear. 2 is med/large tear. 3 Is a rupture. The only propper way to make the diagnosis is with a scan. A&E won't help, they will refer you to the out patients with an appointment in 2-3 weeks time (if you're lucky). Some good private physios will have scanners.

I did my calf, grade 2 tear some years back. Pop & pain as you say. I'm not far from Lilleshall and so got sorted by GB Gymnastics head physio who has a private clinic there.

Scan was done in 24 hours and cost £100 but meant correct treatment straight away. Crutches and rest for 2-3 weeks then 6 weeks of weekly physio. Fine now but shit did it hurt at the time.

Good luck.

Woke up this morning hoping it would just be tight but it still feels like a red hot poker is stuck in it after several icing sessions last night.

Been up at Lewes since 8am. Seen the triage nurse and still waiting to be seen by a doctor.

Think I've come to the wrong place. Thought it was like a quieter a&e but more like a doctor's surgery without appointments.

Hopefully they can give you some painkillers given you can’t take IBP - really do need it for the first few days

Just got home.

Suspected grade 3 tear of the medial gastrocnemius.

Been given a pair of crutches and some cocodamol and sent on my way but if I start to get any extra discomfort in it or any numbness in my foot then I have to get myself to a&e.

Going to make work tough as I average 17,000 steps at work each day.

Hope it doesn't take too long to get back to normal walking.

Ouch. Good to get a diagnosis though..............not a lot you can do for a few days at least other than rest it TBH - keep it elevated when you're sitting down if you can. If you can't have iburofen in any form (can you use a gel ?) you might want to try diclofenac (Voltarol or similar) for soothing/pain relief. There's plenty of rehab stuff online as it starts to improve.................
