Funnily enough I've just trimmed one of my acers which is about 15 foot high.
If it's something like this, they can't/shouldn't be trimmed hard and really needs to be done in the next couple of weeks while still dormant. The only reason to prune it is to try to limit the size or change the shape and normally only entails taking a couple of branches out at an intersection.
If it's only a couple or few cuts, is it really worth getting a tree surgeon (unless it's a very thick single main trunk).
