Just wondering since AMEX sponsor BHA does anyone have one? Are they worth it ? or is it more for businesses for expenses and yanks?

If you're willing to pay £400 a year for one they're worth it. Good perks on them if you travel about. Not worth it IMO and a lot of places to take them due to the higher fee's in reclaiming the money on sales.

I know shops don't like them because it costs more to process Amex payments.

The name gives it away
Got one but had it for years. Good for collecting Nectar points. No annual fee so its just like using a Barclaycard except there are a few places that don't take it so I have a Mastercard as backup.

From a retailers point of view(speaking from a few years ago) they are terrible. Payments from debit/credit cards hit your account about 3/5 days after the transaction American Express used to take three WEEKS!

Some of the above are very outdated. A few retailers still don't accept them, which is fine, as I don't use them, but about 80% of my spending a month, goes on my Amex, which is good enough for me. The excellent travel insurance cover on the platinum card, as well as concierge services, information service, and offers I get more than make up for it.

When I clear the balance each month, do it 3 days before the due date and never had a problem.

I did have a few problems with my account, which were annoying, but I imagine these problems happen at any large organisation.

If you are a traveller, look at the platinum. If not, the Gold, or cash back card might work out well for you.

I've got a Virgin-Amex card, only because you get Virgin airmiles. There's still a few smaller places that don't take it but most places do.

yes, i have a British aiways Amex card. get 1 air mile for every £1 spent, so buy lots on it and pay bills, then pay card off in full each month. no interest and shitloads of airmiles

Only some of them charge a fee, the Nectar Amex card is free.

Ah I guess if you collect Nectar points it's worth it. Was more referring to the rewards for having the platinum, if you're willing to spend the £400 a year, you get good perks.

Same here. c200k of VA miles will come in handy one day.

The card is accepted at c90% of places I try to use it and I've got a Visa version of the same card for the few places - generally small independents - that don't.

This.

Surprising how much you can rack up. I've only been 'collecting' miles for about 2 years and already have 35,000!

Of course, paying for the season tickets on it soon bumps up the mileage. They also give you a VISA card attached to the same account for the retailers that don't take Amex - but you only get half the milage on those transactions.

Gonna get a couple of tickets to Vegas when I get enough points.

I've got the Plat. charge card and costs £400 a year. As said before great if you travel a lot as you get free airport lounge access wordwide (excludes some lounges), free travel insurance for you and the family, concierge service (which ive used to book last minute tickets/hotels which are unavailable through normal means) and card points accrue £s whcih can be used to credit the annual cost. Accepted in 90% of places. Id say it all comes down to how much you would spend on it to justify having it (back to annual cost)I use if for company expenses and personal use so works really well for me

I have the Platinum Cashback Card, accepted pretty much everywhere I use (except KFC) I think it cost me £25 a year and in about 4-5 months I have about £60 cashback already, paid in full so just works as a chargecard by direct debit and as others have said other than Beer money 90% of my monthly spend goes on it!

I have one. Use it all the time and only once has it not been accepted.

The acceptance thing is just an outdated perception. Its nowhere near as bad as its made out. Got the Plat cashback one.

Indeed, but don't forget that you're now only covered for travel booked on your Amex card. On the plus side, more lounges (BA/One World), are now included in the scheme and you and your supp can each take a guest in to the lounge for free.

But the cost going up from £300 to £450....

I use mine as my card of choice. Have a platinum credit card, free to have and the cashback gives me about £100 a year. I just pay in full to avoid interest. Plenty of products available.

I may sound biased, and I do work there to be fair, but it is genuinely my card of choice. I also have a mastercard and visa for back up I rarely use.

Brighton has better coverage as the local businesses take it to satisfy the staff members.

If anyone wants a Euro or dollar currency charge card, just let me know.
