Got a problem in that I keep losing internet and getting message 'Internet Explorer cannot open webpage'. Despite this my wireless network is still showing as connected.

Cannot even log on to my router settings.

Have done check on web and have disabled all the 'add-ons' but this has not worked. Microsoft website suggests this could be a conflict with another program but how can I possibly find this out when the fault is intermittent. Normally can resolve it with a couple of reboots but is a pain.

Did get a PC guy in to take a look and he suggested there was a fault with the router. As this was just under a year old, took it back to PC World and they replaced it but problem still remains.

I keep getting this recently...It probably something to do with your IP address.

However, i find that when I unplug my router for 10 secs and then plug it back in it usually works again.

If this doesn't work, open up a command prompt (go to start ---> run--->type in CMD)

Type
IPconfig /release

followed by

IPconfig /renew

if that doesn't work then you're probably going to need a new network adapter.

Way out west
I had a problem with connectivity a couple of weeks back, in the end I phoned the O2 helpline and the bloke talked me through a couple of checks...none made any difference, then he just told me to push in the reset button on the rear of the router for ten seconds then release, apparently this resets everything and the little box sets itself up again for business, including any updates to its software. Lo and behold I haven't had any problems since then.

If you have an icon on your tray (the bit at the bottom) for your network connection right click on it and then select 'Repair'. That will renew you IP address and should sort you out.

Thanks for the responses. With regard to resetting the router, if you do, make sure you check your security settings as these will be returned to the factory default, probably including any passwords.

Are you using Zone Alarm?

A few weeks ago there was an IE update (and Firefox I believe) that caused Zone Alarm users to lose their ability to get on to the internet.

Apparently Zone Labs have issued a fix but it means setting your Internet Security level to medium to enable you to access the internet in order to download this fix. If you do this you should immediately change back to high security as soon as the download is complete.

I would read up on it first. There is an article in the latest edition of Computeractive which appears in their Q&A section.

hmm wonder if anyone from IT First frequent the board? Maybe a good oppotunity to get the doubting fans on board by offering an "Ask the ITS" section :)

It wasn't an IE update and was nothing to do with Firefox. It was a windows 'critical' security update which conflicted with Zone Alarm and caused connectivity to be lost. I did a system restore which solved the problem.

Ok, you're right there but I believe that the update was to fix a web address translation problem that affected any windows based web browser not just IE.

By doing a system restore you won't have fixed the problem, only restored back to a time before the critical update took place. What happened then? Did Microsoft issue a further critical update or are you still vulnerable to the original translation problem?
