Sorry but your dentist is talking rubbish! The Govt have not withdrawn NHS funding at all. In April new contacts are in place for dentists providing NHS treatment and the bottom line is that many dentists don't like this new contact and hence they are going private.

The irony is that for years NHS dentists moaned about the fact that they were payed on a piece work basis and that the standard set NHS fees did not reflect the time spent or allow them to treat patients on an individual basis. In effect they calim it was a treadmill.

The reality is that most dentists were still comforyably earning £60K a year and most far more. Now the Govt have revamped their contracts and funding has been placed in their PCT's they are still bitching.

Dentists want it both ways and the bottom line is that many want to go private as they can then charge whatever they like!

Right then, I shall be having words!!

Race..now calm down dear. If you have words he either will not treat your kids or give you a very painful time when you are in the chair!

I'm afraid you cannot win with dentists. If you are in pain you will pay up NHS or private. My last visit cost £650 but I was in such agony on the day I would have paid anything.:glare:

How much training do you need to become a dentist, there must be a market for backstreet dentistry, I can see a plan/ or a new ferrari coming my way.

Yep I know that one! I would have paid anything for mine to rid me of a tooth abcess too, which turned into root canal treatment, which turned into huge amounts of cash!

To be fair I like my dentist and hes very good, and the kids like him too and dont mind going, so for the time being I'm happy to pay.

I had an abcess in my root canal because it wasn't put in properly and the post worked loose. I was in agony for 3 days over a weekend because the first lot of antibiotics didn't work.
My face was so swollen the rim of my glasses was digging into my cheek.
I ended up having the crown and post removed and an bridge made. It was supposed to be done on the NHS but the young dentist was going out to Australia the following week so he did it privately but charged me at NHS prices. £450.

We didn't have any problems finding an NHS dentist down here when we moved.
