Anti virus / spyware software- any recs?

Few chaps who I know that work in IT wouldn't touch the likes of McAffee etc. They slow the PC down and are very OTT. If you're not sharing files with strangers and clicking on every link in spam emails then MSE, AVG (free) and the occasional use of Malware Malwarebytes will be more than enough.

Fear sells though, so people buy the big expensive software.
