Nothing like it, every part of a flight is beyond our control.
All I am saying is that flying around the world in a tin can with wings and a couple of jet engines attached to it is a risk, even if it is a calculated one. You cannot compare it to what we do daily like driving or crossing the road.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a bit of turbulence, but when you look at the history of aviation and all the flaws in tracking, landing and take off, even in this modern day, we shouldn't be surprised when accidents happen. Hundreds of people die in one go, gernerations of families and classes of children etc, so it is difficult to compare a plane accident to a normal day to day accident.

When I started work at the CAA at Gatwick [their Safety Regulation Group] circa 1996 on the induction the fella gave the stat for the probability of death by flying.
It was based on per passenger per mile traveled and I can't recall the exact number but it was something like - you would have to fly non-stop for 50 years before you died. Rail, road and ship were all shorter [more likely to die sooner].
The point is, when an aircraft crashes, because it is quite a rare event, its always headline news, folk die in car crashes everyday and often never make the news. Flying is statistically the safest mode of transport.
One last crumb of comfort, should something go wrong at cruising altitude, hypoxia will cause you to painlessly black out - you will feel nothing but 5-10 seconds of blind panic.

But you're far more likely to crash driving to the airport than actually on your flight. Would you consider yourself better at driving, than the pilot is at flying?
