You're right. We had Hungerford and then Dunblane, the Australians had Port Arthur and both the British and Australians acted swiftly to try to prevent them from ever happening again. Sadly, the Americans have had Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Orlando, Vegas, San Ysidro, the cinema in Colorado and so many more and none of them have acted as a catalyst for the US to re-evaluate gun ownership.

In the aftermath of the Colorado shooting, I went online to an American news website to try to get my head around what the issue was. I got absolutely flamed for asking why gun ownership was so important to them. I never really got an answer past being told because of the 2nd Amendment.

I did also suggest that perhaps if the US banned toy guns then that would surely be a measure that would gain universal support. The way I saw it was that the pro-gun lobby are forever talking about responsible gun ownership and respecting what a gun is; the anti-gun lobby are quite rightly aghast at the number of children who are killed or injured accidentally with guns each year. In my opinion, teaching children that guns are not toys would be a good thing. I got shouted down on that also.

The most worrying thing, and I lived in bible belt South Carolina for a year, is you can go out, get absolutely wankered and have a gun in your possession. I also lived in Northern Ireland in the 80s and the cops had guns and were constantly drunk. Alcohol and seriously deadly weapons do not mix. Used to scare the living daylights out of me.

I saw lots of drunk people with guns when I was living in South Africa but can honestly say that only once did I see a gun being pulled out as a threat. It was a road rage incident and the dickhead pulling out the gun was my uncle. Scared the bejasus out of me and I lost all respect for him after that.

There are lots of Western countries with mass gun ownership but the USA seems to be unique in having a culture where people with guns go on shooting sprees. It's not just a gun issue.

Is it? You can quote direct references to this thinking or you found a politically loaded meme that happens to salve your prejudices?

So the bodies are not cold, the shooter hasn't been IDed and your already acusing people of racism for something they haven't done, are you for real?

I think you missed the point.

This.

People don't need automatic rifles and multiple weopons to fight off burglars and rapists.

Civil liberty gone made, of the ilk of Sarah Palin, Charlton Heston and Trump. Crocodile tears are shed for the real people wiped away by their evil law.

Thing is though, knife someone in self defence over there and you'll serve more time.

If this happened in any other nation in the World, everybody would be shocked to the core, as it has happened in America no one is at all surprised.

So sad.

They'll have a candle lit prayer vigil - and then life will carry on as normal including the next gun massacre in a few months time. When I was at the airport departure lounge in Austin Texas the bookstore was full of gun magazines - talk about gun porn.

CNN keeps asking for everybody's prayers - they don't need your prayers, they need gun control

I will never forget when a taxi driver in Miami pulled out his gun because I asked how he would protect himself from trouble.
It was like a pistol but had a foot long barrel.
I had been to America a few times but never seen a personal weapon before.
As a British tourist it truly shocked me.
After watching Louis Theroux recently in a small town in Virginia and in Millwaukee, I have decided that due to guns and the unbelievable drug problem that The USA is a toilet of a country.
I know it's big and large parts are beautiful, but in general it's a Khazi with a nutter in charge.

There are none so blind as those that will not see

Trite, but apt.

There are 3 certainties in life: death, taxes and US mass shooting incidents.
