I have approx 700 songs on my ipod which I have painstakingly loaded on to my computer and now sit in my itunes library.

The problem is my computer is full of viruses and I think it has had it to the point where I could do with a new computer. I don't seem to be able to find a way of transfering my itunes library to another computer. Everytime I charge my ipod (on a different computer at work) it asks if I want to synch to the ipod library on that computer which has nothing in it. I'm paranoid I'm going to wipe the ipod clear.

Any ideas?

Just manually put all the MP3s on a flash drive or CD or something and then load them up on the new computer when you get it. Aside from that I think there are things you can buy that will transfer music from your iPod to a new computer, but I'm not sure these are supported by Apple.

You don't need software.

Plug the ipod in (select no when given the option to sync)
Go to the start menu,
go to computer
go to the ipod open it. (i.e. access it as if it were a usb stick)

Then on this ipod window go to tools > folder options > view tab

In the advance options scroll menu there is an option for hidden files and folders. Select 'show hidden files and folders' then click ok.

You should then have a new folder (slightly feinter). This is where you will find your music (file names tend to be like 'aaa' 'ads' etc).

Click and drag it into your music folder or on your computer somewhere.

Download itunes, and it will find the music. If you already have itunes, go to file > add file to library > locate the file with the music you added to the computer and select it. Itunes will then import it.
