so when did Poyet actually say that he was considering someone for captain who was not with us yet....is it part of his interview on seagulls player now, as I couldn't make sense of all of his mumblings.

Sparrow captained Scunthorpe, Greer captained Swindon. Is it just me who is a little bit concerned that if we snap up another captain type, that the personalities might clash in the dressing room? The last thing we want is for divides to start in the squad.

To be honest I thought quite the opposite today; the level of communication and number of leaders on the pitch was something I havent seen from an Albion side for a long time. Kish, Elphick, Greer, Sparrow, Navarro are all great leaders and I think it can only be good. None of them seem particularly abrasive characters at all.

It all starts off ok. But what if there is a clash between them? I'm all for having plenty of leaders on the pitch, but I think you have to keep it in perspective. When we signed Greer there were rumours/allegations that he'd fallen out with Jonathon Douglas at Swindon over captaincy issues. I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but how's he going to feel if Sparrow, or a newer signing, gets the captaincy ahead of him?

I'm just playing the Devil's advocate. From the outside looking in, the more leaders you can assemble the better. But they're all people with personalities and there could be a clash if you get too many similar types of character together. I foresee problems, though I hope there won't be.

There are different types of leaders though, the vocal kind, the kind that lead by example and probably a few combinations of both qualities. Gus touched on this in his interview saying how last year Crofts lead by example but was not such a vocal guy, whereas Greer is a very vocal type of captain. My guess is that Gus is talking about an experienced striker who will be a leader by example (hence my David Healy thread, which was based on various deductions like this)!

May be wrong, but I don't think Sparrow was ever captain at Scunthorpe? Long-serving player, led by example, yes - but I'm not sure he was ever given the arm-band. Cliff Byrne & Izzy Iriekpen have skippered the Iron in recent seasons. I don't think there'll be too much confrontation anyway to be honest, Gus won't be having any of it.

What the f**k are you on ..... Lua Lua as captain ? Really, i wonder why some of you bother to put posts here.
Are you living in cloud cuckoo land ?

In fairness, the original post title kinda reads "a new player coming in next week, could he be our new captain?" and the response "common sense would say lua lua" is the short hand way of saying 'There's been lots of rumours about us being close to bringing in lua lua, he is probably the big signing gus was mentioning, so no, probably not a captain"

It was only later in the thread that it was made clear Poyet might have said the big signing next week could be considered for captain that suggesting lua lua becomes less likely.

The team spirit was there for all to see today. High fives going around at every opportunity, everyone really pulling in the right direction which was great to see.

I think this team will be considered the greatest Brighton team we have had so far, I really do. There are a few tweaks to be made but with Gus & Tanno leading them this lot could go all out & see us into the top level of the Championship in the next couple of seasons.
We are definitely witnessing the rebirth of B&HAFC under the leadership of Tony Bloom, Gus & Tanno.

Errr.. the promotion side of 1978? The First Division team of 1980/81? This lot have a way to go yet. But i like your positivity.

Absolutely, though you cannot help but think that Mark from Shoreham would have "wired" the Argus comments page in 1980 bemoaning the lack of depth in that Top 10 finishing squad.

Mark123 says: "Get your chequebook out Bamber, what if Foster, Lawrenson or Smith get injured in the first two games, we'll be doomed....doomed I tell you..."

OGH in the Argus:

“The gaffer has got his eye on other players that we are massively aware of, that were maybe here last season as well, so it’s looking good.”

“We’ve brought in some decent players and the gaffer is obviously going to bring some other players in as well so it’s good."

Sounds like he expects Lua Lua and/or Hendrie, plus . . .
