Looks like the 10 year old panasonic is giving up, it's developed a noticeable green tinge to it.
So we're looking for a new TV and what better place to look than on a football forum.
What I want :
37-40 inch
Full HD
preferably under £500

Don't want 3D

Dunno about "smart" - is it worth it as I can get iplayer/itv player on my scattelite box ?

you can go to tesco or argos and get what you want that size for 500. might wanna wait a bit, as they'll probably be good deals on tellies coming up due to olympics/euros.

always worth a look in richer sounds (check online) plenty of decent full HD freeview 37" (good brand name LG etc) for under £400, cheap 5 yr guarantees too.

You can get 40" for £300 on Argos, two years ago I bought a 32" for that price. Don't expect all the latest features, but the picture quality is fine- a pixel is a pixel!

Good advice we bought our last LG one there and cheap as chips.

Thanks for the replies.
£3D is definately out as I have a slight convergence problem with my eyes and I've heard that 3d glasses can exacerbate this and cause eye strain/headaches.

As for Argos/Amazon/Sainsburys, I'd rather pay a bit more and buy from people who know what they are on about so I'm most likely to use a local telly shop or Richer sounds but that means a trip to the big city

Shame nowhere seems to be doing an Upgrade Your Telly tie-in with the Euros/Jubilee/Olympics. For the last World Cup, people like Currys were chucking money at you if you wanted to swop your analogue set for a digital one. They gave me a hundred quid trade-in for my old set and even took it away for free - which saved me dumping it in the driveway of the poshest neighbours same as everybody else does . Combined with an online discount code that saved me another 15% I got a 40" LG for next to no money at all. I think the smoked glass stand for the thing may have even ended up costing more than the actual TV

Have you by any chance just put a hi-fi or other speaker next to your telly, or moved your telly next to your speakers?
If so, you will get a green tinge, due to the magnets in the speakers.
Just a thought.

The most curious thing..
Once you have decided on brand and make, definitely do a price comparison as there can be significant differences in prices between various shops (even on-line). We got a Toshiba from Curreys purely because they happened to have good deal at the time - also don't assume any of sales staff have the faintest idea what they talking about regardless of the company.

You say that but there will be a marked difference, a pixel is only a small component of what goes on - backlighting, contrast rations, image processing etc. It's almost like saying a tyre is a tyre so why buy a bentley over a mondeo.

FWIW to the OP I have an LED Samsung 40" D6100 and am very happy with it, cost me £550 a couple of months ago. Very good 2D panel and it has 3D, but according to expert reviews the 3D isn't too good but seems alright when I've given it a go. Tbh I didn't have the extra £ for full HD 3D so I am not fussed.

Asda are now selling a LG 50 inch plasma for £447 (same model in Currys will set you back £529 and Tesco £629). With a thinner chassis and bezel it will take up the same space as a chunkier 42 incher from 5 or 6 years ago.
