Very sad.

Perhaps now is the time for regular cardiac health check ups at all levels of the sport?

Ringmer FC is sorry to announce the death of Herve King. Herve collapsed in open play seventeen minutes into Saturday's game at the Caburn against Three Bridges. Herve was eventually taken to the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton after extensive treatment initially from Ian Fairs, Ringmer's sports therapist and his colleague Tracey Weller from Three Bridges and a number of spectators and players and then the crews of two ambulances. Despite the sterling efforts from all concerned Herve was pronounced dead earlier this evening.

Herve King had just re-signed for Ringmer and today's game was his third in this, his second spell at the club. Herve was a twenty seven year old data analyst who played previously for Croydon Athletic, Redhill, Chipstead and Burgess Hill. Herve was a charming and popular figure wherever he played. He leaves behind a partner and a two year old daughter and Ringmer FC's players, officials and supporters extend heartfelt sympathies to them both and the rest of his family.

This is just so sad and now is maybe not the time to debate this but there seem these days to be more deaths at sport than ever before.

Perhaps BOF is right and cardiac checks need to be done.

There are some things which just can't be detected. Besides, if you look closely & in these days where insurence rules, they probably would be quite a few barred from partaking in the activities they love.

Remember Asa Hartford, a top player who's move to Liverpool was stopped because they found a hole in the heart? He played on for many years at the top level & with Scotland. he played on because he loved the game.

None of us know what fate holds. It's a tragic story and very sad for all involved but his last moments were spent doing something he loved.

SUSSEX football was in shock after a player collapsed and died 17 minutes into a match.

Spectators watched in horror when Ringmer's Herve King, 27, suddenly collapsed in their match against Three Bridges.

Paramedics spent 40 minutes trying to resuscitate the midfielder on the pitch at The Caburn in Ringmer.

The Sussex County League division one game had barely begun and neither team had scored when the player fell to the ground while standing on his own.

The game was immediately abandoned.

Mr King was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where doctors continued CPR. He was pronounced dead at about 4.45pm.

The incident has stunned supporters and people at the ground where the mood was sombre even before the death was announced.

Many left the ground in floods of tears.

Team-mates followed the ambulance to hospital where doctors told them of the tragic news.

Club bar man John Harris said: "It's mystified everyone. He went down and didn't move again. As far as I know nothing like this has ever happened before at the club.

"You just don't expect to see a young person collapse and not move."

Ringmer Football Club chairman Richard Soan said: "Everybody is absolutely devastated.

"We managed to get paramedics here within seven minutes of him collapsing. They were brilliant.

"They gave him CPR right to the hospital where a team of medics worked on him."

Peter Bentley, chairman of the Sussex County League, called the death a "major tragedy".

He said: "As a player and administrator for this club since 1974 I have never known anything like this happen. My sympathy goes out to all involved. The people watching the game, colleagues and close friends, family and dependants.

"The hard thing will be for his family. He went off to play football this morning and the next thing they know is he's dead. That's soul-destroying.

"It's difficult to be able to put into words. We sympathise with everyone involved."

Pay your tributes to Herve King>
