The Greys on Southover Street has closed. From their Facebook page:

We are very sorry to have to let you know that The Greys is no longer open. Marc has had to make the dreadful decision to cease trading. He's grateful to loyal customers and steps down having tried to carry on and grow the great reputation The Greys has acquired. Following in the bespoke shoes of Alan & Sue Grey, the inimitable Mike Lance, the bonhomie of Chris'n'Gill and the stalwart temp-tenure of Nathan has been an experience Marc cherishes, though, sadly, the economics of the roller-coaster have proved not to add up.

Big thanks to all staff, especially Mark R and Rodin C-S, who rode the ride; to Chef Mohammed, whose recent arrival saw the (too late) beginnings of a real turn around; to Paul / terrace cred. and Anthony Duke for rebuilding the reputation and audiences for great live music - to all those acts, local, countrywide and international who provided some of the very best live music in one of the very best intimate venues you could ever hope to find; to Ed for installing and handling an amazing, bespoke sound system that universally received tremendously positive feedback from artist and audience - and, of course, to the appreciative, listening audiences that have come to these unique gigs.

Hopefully, something will materialise to allow this great little pub to carry on - until then...

Pubs and bars price themselves out of business. Simple as that.

I don't normally bite but if you know anything about how the business currently works that is a ridiculous, obtuse comment.

If you don't then fine, you just don't know what you're on about.

Especially sad to lose a live music venue such as this.

I don't suppose you'd like to back that statement up...?

Large one and others who seemed to presumptiously jump on my comment

I meant as in the sense of Southover Street's comment - that pubs are held
to ransom it seems and I did not aim the criticism at the pub or the
staff itself.

I live in London - and it's getting ***** ridiculous the way that prices are
hiked for no obvious reason (other than the greed of the chains etc).
And before you say it - i.e., 'don't go then' I don't go to pubs half as often as I used to.

It's a shame that you didn't say that in your first post then.

Some good pubs In that area when I lived there 25 years ago. The Greys and the geese amongst my favourites always had a good ambience about them.

Hate to see pubs close but most people just can't afford to use them anymore. I used to frequent them on a regular basis but now it's on special occasions only. My town hadn't lost a pub in 20 years but now has lost two in the last 12 months. Very sad.

doug,

much as you have shown me up in the previous post I have to agree.
From being an affordable, relatively frequent event - I think twice now before
I go into a boozer/socialise and even then spend less time in there - simply because
40 notes or so goes a very short way.

I am sure The Beachcomber and The Hole In The Wall (v Bar) closed down over 12 months ago, which two do you mean Doug?
