I’m old fashioned enough to somehow think it’s worse for a man to hit a woman than it is for them to hit another man. No real logic to it - simply the way I feel.
The problem with using words like assault and female in the press reports is the deliberate intention to immediately frame readers thoughts. In a nano second we’ve got this image of a big burly man punching the living daylights out of some gentle defenceless waif and it can be nothing of the sort. Assault can be effectively brushing against someone or even verbally disagreeing without even making contact which is a long way off what most readers believe as they make their judgement from a headline. Not condoning this guys behaviour, more the responses too including the sentence. Makes me wonder about CJS when other ‘crimes’ get left off with a verbal warning.
