Obviously not enough time allowed for nominatons

It wasn't time based. It was first 24 entrants that are seconded allowed. It's impossible to tell how much interest something like this is going to have until you put it up. I was concerned 32 was going to be too much, but perhaps it'll be 32 next year. See how it goes.

BUZZZTT!

The competitors for Best Stand Up Comedian Ever (2012) are:

Stewart Lee
Dara O'Briain
Tim Minchin
Micky Flanaghan
Russell Howard
Bill Hicks
Eddie Izzard
Ricky Gervais
Chris Rock
Reginald D Hunter
Jimmy Carr
Kevin Bridges
Stewart Francis
Milton Jones
Rhod Gilbert
Ross Noble
Frankie Boyle
Frank Skinner
Tim Vine
Sean Locke
Richard Pryor
Dylan Moran
Lee Mack
Bill Bailey

I've worked with all of those guys (note: guys. Couldn't get a single woman on there?) except for 5; the two dead ones (naturally), and Eddie, Chris Rock, and Dylan Moran.

I'll be honest, it's a pretty good list of people who have a lot of industry credibility; well done for not putting people like Roy Chubby Brown or Joe Pasquale. But without Michael McIntyre - the single most successful stand-up comedian of the last ten years, it's a bit like having the champions league without Barcelona.

Not my choice. I was shocked McIntyre didn't get more support, but that's how this works. Always next year for him.

How on Earth has Shappi Khorsandi not been mentioned yet?

Is it too late to second Sarah Millican?

I'm guessing people thought he was an automatic choice. Also it's not considered 'cool' to admit you like McIntyre in the same way as nobody in France admits eating McDonalds, even though that's their biggest customer in the whole of Europe. :)

Good luck with this btw. There's nothing more subjective than comedy. What one person will cry with pain at, the next person is left cold. If you don't believe that, you should see the replies to my twitter feed. People are aggressive to the point of threatening if they don't find you funny ... !

I'm prepared for the fact this will be a feisty affair. In fact, I'm counting on it.

No Billy Connolly, no Robin Williams, no Michael McIntyre. I wonder whether I'll make the nominations work differently next year, not sure...

Is there such as thing as a funny female comic? Seriously? I'm struggling to think of one, certainly UK based anyway. Victoria Wood maybe?? But that is very British Variety Performance comedy. Also not very active nowadays. Ditto French and Saunders.

The ones mentioned on here are cringe worthy (Sarah Milliegan and Shappi Whatsherface)!

Zoe Lyons has one good joke (Rose West one).
Andi Osho, Gina Yashier, are they the same person?
Lucy Porter, Josie Long all very meh!

Worst of them all is that Miranda woman, about as funny as a dose of the clap.

Well, clearly there is, else they wouldn't have the huge followings and sell-out tours. Nobody buys a ticket/DVD for someone out of sympathy. The key fact is that you don't find them funny. And if you don't find any woman funny, it might be a reflection on how your perceive women, not on whether women are funny or not. I totally accept that you aren't on your own though, and that this is a common opinion.

For example, this weekend at Komedia, Kerry Godliman is on. She's like a female Mickey Flanagan; very dry, great storyteller. I'm pretty certain 80% of the crowd will love her, because she's funny. We wouldn't put her on otherwise. :)

Sarah Millican is f***ing funny

I'm sorry, she just isn't. It's called "accent" comedy. You change her accent to a plain south of England and she has NO career.

I don't find her act funny, just my opinion, but I think her act is all to do with her accent, if she was from London or the south, her act wouldn't be as succesful as it is.

Bosh. Spot on. It's one joke, effectively.

I'm not sure you can compare sport with entertainment in that sense - In sport most successful = best - In TV/Film/Comedy/Music it's obviously subjective. Was Rick Astley the 'best' artist of 1987?? Possibly not!

Daniel Kitson's the best comedian. He doesn't do awards so he'll be happy he's not in the running

I hope one of the things that'll come from this competition is people on NSC finding new comedy they like. I'm sure a number of people voting won't have seen a fair few of the other contenders, and this is where the videos come in.

Very meh, most of her jokes have something to do with cake, definitely better than "sounds and looks like a man" Miranda though.

Whenever I've been to a comedy stand-up night (Kratar et al.) if there has been a woman they have always been the weakest act. There was a woman at Komedia a couple of years ago who's entire act seemed to be based on breasts and the word c*nt, about 10 people (a hen do I believe) were in fits of laughter and the rest of us were struggling to find anything to laugh at.

OK, fair point. But in comedy, "most successful" = most tickets and DVDs sold, and that's not in any question. (McIntyre. Not Astley. Though he might have been.)
