He wasn't our player of the season for nothing a couple of years ago, and I can only applaud the way he's kept with it despite Poyet overlooking him. He could have easily thrown a wobbly - esp when Poyet left him out of the squad at Villa last year.
He was our player of the season because he threw himself in front of the ball a couple of times in the winter of a season when we were spectacularly shit.

I agree fully with your first sentence, but the second could not be more wrong. His attitude is absolutely not the issue - Gus himself, had called him a 'great proffessional'. He will never be a Gus player, because he is not comfortable on the ball. End of.

Ah I stand corrected. I presumed it was a clash of attitudes or something because I always felt quite happy with him on the ball.

Although that of course was then, when I didn't know what good on the ball was! The current crop are beyond words comfortable. Even El Abd!

You wot? It wasn't exactly second-bottom of div three bad, he ain't Jamie Campbell. Whing is a good defender at this level, the one time I've seen him this season (Burgess Hill, admittedly) he didn't put a foot wrong and was passing it about. The fact that Charlton and Scunny wanted Whing and McNulty suggests they probably aren't that pony.

This. Whing is a fine example, even though he's got to know he won't get a game here, i bet he'll still do his absolute best to get in the team no matter what.

Whing at his best was a great defender - a good old fashioned RB who tackles hard and clears his lines. At his best he is probably championship quality, however he is not going to fit into a neat passing side like us, Calde and Painter do not have to make as many tackles because their positioning is better - Whing is perfect for a longball physical side at this level.

I would take them wanting Whing with a pinch of salt because Gus has always said if he can get fixed up he can go out on loan. Having said that he will possibly do ok for Orient because they are a low grade Div 1 side managed by a low grade manager, who is ok at avoiding relegation but that is about the limit of both.

Slade has proved his ability at many clubs and is exactly what I have said good at avoiding relegation but no more or perhaps TB was wrong to sack him and we would be in the same position if he was still here.

That's not correct. Whing conceded the penalty after Colchester had already pulled a goal back, and were apparently causing havoc in the area. There was no surprise when they went on to win.

Sorry, I was misinformed by my Orient mate. I will rebuke him for that. He deffo gave me the impression that Whing had caused the turnaround.

Struggling at the bottom of Div 1 level, not Championship certainties...

I thought Slade took Yeovil to the play off final beating Forest in the semi and losing to Blackpool in the final. I also thought he took Grimsby to a play-off final again losing but not bad ways of avoiding relegation.

I liked Slade and felt for him when he was sacked but he is tactically light years behind Gus and TB is 100% vindicated in his sacking of Slade and appointment of Gus, given what is happening at the moment.

That season was the worst we've been since Gillingham, just because it wasn't Gillingham doesn't mean it wasn't shit. In some ways it was worse because it was so needless. It was self inflicted shit.

Whing was an alright player. He's gone downhill in his time here. all I'm saying is that player of the season thing doesn't really prove he's some superb defender. McNulty is an excellent player though.

Yes, but he's not a low grade manager as Bens Grandad suggests and it's incredibly disigenuous to suggest that he is given what he did for this club.

No Slade = League 2
League 2 = no Gus Bus.

Whish is of course why he won the award over a lot of players who were not.

Slade should be well remembered for keeping us up, of course, and lest we forget bringing in some top quality players - Bennett, Dicker, Crofts, all Slade signings, even if he brought in some rubbish too and ulitmately blew his chance here.

Who were not what?

Whing wasn't our best player that season, it was a chance of timing and an indication of the type of people that vote for these things (Crofts over Bennett, Elphick over forster etc).

There must be some kind of compulsion among certain Brighton fans to find something to moan about. We're top, playing superbly and the stadium's nearly with us, but still there's got to be something, hasn't there? I know... I'll have an entirely unneccessary pop at a player who gave his all for this club, isn't even here at the moment, and is unlikely ever to play for us again.

Well Whing was not selected for Orient in their Cup game on Saturday because apparently Albion didn't want him Cup-tied.

But that might be becauise it could affect his sell-on or loan-on value to another club after the loan finishes, presumably in January.

A formal apology here.

After seeing the Orient game highlights including a spectacular 25 yard from Whingy, and receiving a fulsome match report from my O's contact at the game, I wish to retract the stark criticism implicit in the thread title.

Obvious now that Whing had a dip in form of a couple of seasons, probably when not match-fit, and is now back to the form )at right back) which made him an integral part of the Albion team.

Except of course he's now at Orient. But would be ironical if they now got to a play-off spot, with Cox and Revell also regulars.
