It gives me great pleasure to announce the launch of Brighton-based companyStripe Publishing's first ten books, The Random Book of... series.

The titles dig deep through history to take an off-beat look at the achievers, deceivers, winners, losers, rulers, spoilers, givers, murderers, funny men and bad men called Robert, Richard, Paul, Michael, Matthew, Andrew, Christopher, David, James and John.

The accessible but stylish hardbacks, which feature illustrations by award-winning Times daily pocket cartoonist Jonathan Pugh, have already won critical plaudits and gone straight into Waterstone’s.

The books are the perfect stocking filler for dads, uncles, brothers, husbands, cousins, nephews and friends who share the name on the cover.

There's a strong Albion connection with two of the authors - Dave Blake and Dan Tester - being South Stand season ticket holders.

Books are available from all good bookshops and, slightly cheaper, on eBay.

I assumed you were asking which was the best of Charlie Oatway's middle names.

I'm puzzled: why is Paul Gascoigne holding a book with "Paki" written on the front cover?

The last letter is clearly an 'l' - there's no dot!

You do have a point though.

Gazza asked if he was in it - he is - and then requested a copy.

He said that he was reading a lot at the moment and that it was helping him with his demons - which is nice.

I know, I know. The "u" does look a bit strange though.

That's a nice story about Gazza - glad something's helping him.
