An extremely compelling argument that referees/FA have been biased toward Man U

I simply CANNOT fathom the idea of football from the perspective of somebody who CHOOSES a team to support, regardless of their geographic location, purely on the grounds of their success. It is an alien concept to me. I have supported my team wholeheartedly when they have been TOTAL shit. And there have been times when they were so shit it was painful, but I stuck by it because for me, there's no upping and switching to another team, that just doesn't work. I love my club, I actually LOVE it, even when Nicky Rust was haplessly flapping about picking ball after ball out of his net on the way to another humiliating defeat in the basement division. Didn't matter. It was heartbreaking, but that's because it meant something to me. Just like the success we are currently enjoying (last two games withstanding) is like cloud nine to me. It would mean a f*** of a lot less if I'd just picked Albion out of a hat to start supporting now they've got a nice ground and play enjoyable football.

Agreed. But I don't hate bigger clubs or their glory-hunting fans for it, if anything I feel more of a sense of pity. I have plenty of friends who 'support' Man Utd or Chelsea etc, and there is no way that they get the same enjoyment out of 'supporting' their club that I do out of supporting mine. They expect to win things, and when they don't, they are disappointed. We're the other way around, and the success my club is having at the moment gives me far greater pleasure than these people will ever get of the beautiful game. So it's their loss, they are the ones that are missing out.

Seems very unlikley, and the decisions going the way of United are probably more to do with them having had a very good team for the past 20 years. It's only a game anyway; Man Utd's results make zero difference to my enjoyment of a weekend.

As I mentioned to a friend previously, I got more pleasure out of Nicky Forster's goal against Stockport than he would from 10 Champions League wins. That's the difference.

While I basically agree with you, I don't remember Liverpool being quite AS hated as Man Utd in the 70s and 80s. People got sick of it them always being them on the TV, winning everything, nicking the best players etc, but I don't think there was the same opinion of the club as a whole, and there certainly wasn't the same hatred for the managers.

That's was the thing with Liverpool. They won everything and so got a load of glory hunting young armchair fans (myself included)

Man U though, they branded everything, set up their poxy superstores and sold themselves to the masses, travelling halfway around the world and ducking out of the FA cup when it suited them. Throw in that graceless sod fergie and that's why they get more stick.

I don't get it. If a large percentage of football fans can't stand United, then how does it follow that the Referees' Association manage to recruit such a high proportion of United fans? Unless, of course, this argument is bollocks, written by somebody with an agenda.

The fact is, when United get a decision in their favour, within seconds, Twitter is full of thousands of people pronouncing that it must be because the referee is biased towards them, half the time before it's even been shown on TV and these sheep haven't even had the chance to see it. When Wigan get a decision in their favour, nobody notices, therefore it isn't the subject of a debate, and the myth is allowed to permeate our psyche that only United get the decisions.

It's a fact that officials are swayed by larger crowds, and there is some evidence to suggest that the so called bigger clubs get more decisions in their favour (marginally), but any more than that is just horseshit, perpetuated by supporters of other teams annoyed at something that hasn't gone their way. Yes, United probably get more penalties than QPR, but then they're probably in the opponents' penalty box ten times more than QPR manage, and they have stronger, trickier players, up agains inferior and clumsier defenders. Look how many yellow cards we got last season. Was that because we were victimised by referees, or because our players, inexperienced at this level, dived in just a bit too much, or were beaten by wilier, faster opponents and tricked into bringing them down?

It's so boring whining on about United. We all have a laugh when things go tits up for the bigger clubs, but to continually bang on about Fergie and United penalties etc is, in my opinion, based on our own lazy prejudices rather than fact, and, dare I say it, a little bit small-time.

Indeed. Any manager with any sense wont want it. The job to take at Man Utd is the one taking over from whoever has failed after Ferguson.

Remind me to quote you on this next time you launch another Pompey rant.

Good job you never get a bee in your bonnet about anything then, isn't it.
