Apparently the Ukrainian was a well known pick-pocket, the English lads asked 2 Policeman who watched the whole episode to move him on and did nothing!! Useless tossers. And to make matters worse the guy is due up in court to face a murder charge OR maybe LESS!! Work that one out.

wherever the money is
We get blamed for all the trouble caused wherever we go yet it is always English fans that get killed. I will not and have not ever condoned the violent faction of English supporters but We have an innocent supporter stabbed to death for chasing a pick pocket. That coupled with the murders in Turkey and the continuous reports of Police being heavy handed should hopefully make FIFA realise that it us that get the rough end of the stick at away games. I would like to reiterate that I do not in any way condone the mindless morons that go out of their way to cause trouble but would like to see "TRUE" English fans getting a fair deal.

Wolves fan Stephen Smith was stabbed to death celebrating England’s win in Portugal while “living his dream”, his family said today.

The 28-year-old mechanic was partying with thousands of other euphoric supporters in Lisbon before a pickpocket stabbed him in the heart.

Suspected illegal immigrant Vadym Abramov, 31, from the Ukraine, was arrested after the killing in the early hours of the morning close to Lisbon’s main Rossio Square.

Abramov, known to local police as a thief who preys on tourists, was due to appear in court later today.

The killing came just hours after England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia put them through to the Euro 2004 quarter-finals against hosts Portugal on Thursday.

Today the tragic fan’s parents, John and Diane Smith, paid tribute to their son. The England team and the FA also sent the family their condolences.

In an emotional statement, Stephen’s parents said their son died during a round the world trip which started in April.

“Stephen, or Ste, as everyone knew him, was a hard-working man who would help anyone.

“Many of his friends referred to him as Smiler.

“We as a family are just glad Ste was living his dream when this tragedy happened. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.”

The statement was read by Superintendent Mike Treble outside Wednesfield police station, West Midlands.

Mr Treble said Stephen, from Wolverhampton, who doted on his two and a half year-old nephew Ben, had spent the last two years preparing to travel the world.

He said the “fanatical” Wolves supporter had been in full-time employment since leaving school, and had left England to work in France, Spain, and then Portugal and was planning to carry on to Italy and Australia.

“The grand plan was to finish on New Year’s Eve in New York.

“This was a man with great ambitions who was trying to fulfil that dream,” the policeman added.

Stephen, who was single with no children, got tickets for the England matches before he left the UK.

He was travelling with a friend and had been joined by others in Portugal for the matches.

Mr Treble said: “This is a tragic incident where a young man has lost his life fulfilling a lifelong dream to travel the world.”

A makeshift shrine of flags and flowers was erected by stunned England fans in Rossio Square, about 200 yards from the murder scene.

James Ellam, 27, from Mirfield, West Yorkshire said: “It’s such a shame because it was a great atmosphere last night and everybody had been celebrating a great win. It takes the edge off it.

“The Portuguese will be as upset as us that this could happen to them.”

At one point, England fans among a crowd of around 100 people gathered around the shrine sang the national anthem.

Portuguese police said the stabbing was not football-related and urged England fans to continue their peaceful mood of recent days.

The tragedy happened in Rua Augusta at 3.30am.

Witnesses said the killer struck as around 200 fans were sitting around at tables toasting England’s triumph.

Haskell Noah, 35, a delivery driver from Golders Green, north west London, said: “This guy had been coming up and down for hours trying to take people’s wallets and everyone was fed up with him.

“We’d been telling the police about him but they didn’t do anything.

“An England guy pushed him away, he went away and came back about two minutes later and went straight over to a different guy just sitting at a table and stabbed him.

“A girl was screaming and police came running across to arrest the attacker as he ran away.

“They got him on the ground and got the handcuffs on him.”

Mr Smith was taken to Lisbon’s Sao Joseph Hospital but died from his injuries despite doctors’ attempts to save his life.

The suspect is understood to be in Portugal illegally. His authorisation to stay in the country ran out last October, sources said.
RIP Stephen. He died living his dream. He was single with no children.

When I heard that on the news this morning it really hit me hard because one of my colleagues is that age and out in Portugal for a fortnight taking in as many games as possible (not just England ones)

It turned out not to be him (obviously) but it could just have easily been.

Commiserations to his family.
