An ancient memory of David James..Anyone else?

We were playing Watford at Vicarage Road, a very long time ago. That donkey's donkey, Raphael Meade, a player who is not much behind the legendary Mark Farrington in the all-time asininity stakes, somehow managed to make contact with the ball (a very rare occcurence) and ineptly toe-poked it towards the Watford goal. Mr. James, at that time a young Watford goalkeeper, leant towards the ball and then watched helplessly amidst our collective jubilation as it trickled between his legs into the net.
I have often remembered this as I marvel at his selection for England.

Well, he did it again! Not for the first time!

Surely Michel is qualified by residence by now?

That wasn't our opening day fixture circa 1989 by any chance where we won 1-0 and the chants of "Brighton are back!" resounded around the away stand?

I was in the away end for that goal...seem to remember it was an evening game. James was being touted as The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread at the time...not that night he wasn't. 1-0 win, thanks David.

I have NEVER rated him, and quite how he has established himself as Englands No 1 confuses and alarms me considerably.

It was an evening game, and I maybe remember it slightly differently. I seem to remember that he was on the edge of the box (or even just outside it) when it happened, and I think Meade had to 'run' past him and finish it off.

But I might be mistaken as I was quite busy laughing (not well received as I was sitting in the Watford seats - "Aren't you in the wrong place, son?" - after the nice steward let me in for nothing.)

Michel joined in the summer of 2000, so by my maths hes got another year to go before he qualifys for England :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

He was at Bristol Rovers before that, so he proabably does qualify now.

Atilla - I have clear unrestrained joyous memories of that occasion at Watford, with just one postulation. I could have sworn it was Kurt Nogan who nutmegged the Semi-Detached Suburban Dropsy - not Meade. Anyone care to clarify?

It was definately Meade. Which made it all the more amusing.

It was Meade and it was an evening game. I seem to remember him running at James with a badly controlled ball. James came out to collect but Meade got their first and James,as has become his trademark, conceeded a howler.

The "new John Barnes" going under the name of Rod Thomas came on as sub for Watford in the 2nd half.

wherever the money is
I remember him twice at the goldstone
1) nearly getting arrested for kicking the ball into the south stand when warming up and
2) coming on in a testimonial ( steve gattings I think ) and getting lobbed from the half way line by Gazza.

some things never change :lolol:

I like the fact that we get Irish games and scotland, wales, spanish league, south american games and so on because I am a football fan and will watch it all day given half a chance. The more football the better in my book

I think it was about March 92. Watford had been singing England's No 1 at James and, after hs howler silenced them, we took up the chant. My recollections of the goal differ slightly from some of the others, it was some time ago so I could well be wrong. I recall a very weak shot or pass rolling towards James, totally failing to gather it and palming it off straight to the feet of Meade who gratefully tapped it in. A 1-0 win and a happy walk back through the allotments.

He has always been a disaster waiting to happen. Last night's blunder could prove very costly.

Remember the friendly (think it might have been Ryan's though) as I sat in the South Stand. When this lanky skinny kid went in goal for the second half I assumed he had won a raffle prize to play in the game!!!

How come with a Premier League supposedly as strong as ours have we only got 2 English keepers playing regularly out of 20 clubs ?

I can see a situation in the future where half of the England side will come from the first division (Aka Championship). However exciting that might be for the players in the Championship should'nt we be able to put together the cream of English football from the top 10 clubs in the Premiership.

Exactly - If someone could explain the mysterious rise of David James to England's No.1, please do so. I would be eternally grateful.

I think it was March as well, but thought it might have been '91 (wouldn't swear on it). That's how I remember the goal as well, CS.

I also remember marvelling at how James was rated as a promising young keeper.

31 March 1992. I only got there for the second half as I was preparing to go to Bulgaria the next day. I had to pay £3 to get in (half price) which the steward undoubtedly pocketed.

I remember it was a blunder, but the details are not too clear. It was either a backpass to James, which was fumbled and finished off by Meade, or a shot from Meade that had the approximate speed and accuracy of a backpass that James fumbled.

And I thought that he was the perfect replacement for Grobbellar (sp?) when Liverpool bought him - i.e. error prone.
