Standing in the way of control
not true

When i was there the other week, they are very confident that the amsterdam local government won't enforce these laws, they are notorious for not following the national government's policies. For example magic mushrooms were banned recently but they are still 'allowed' to sell them branded as 'truffles'. Cannabis IS actually already illegal, it is just tolerated.

Some of the pubs around the city centre won't sell to non-locals under the new laws (they're not really new laws, but there's been a bit of a tightening up due to some stupid incidents.)

The red light windows could be shut if some of the city planners get their way. They want to turn it into more of a shopping destination. I sense money will talk with that one - it will depend on the level of investment they can attract and whether it will offset the loss in "tourism".

I have lived in Amsterdam for over 10 years and I love it. The main red light is shrinking but still good. I don't think it will close totally but you never know. Over a 100 years ago they filled in a load of the canals, glad they didnt fill them all in!

Not sure if it is the best option for a stag weekend, depends on age and taste. I am in my mid 40s, short, chubby and drink loads of quality beer and never go to coffee shops. The plus points for a stag in my opinion is its easy place to get around speaking English, red light, coffee shops, beer bike ride an option. It has for sure got more expensive
If you like good beer, the Wildeman, Arens nest and beer temple (the american one not the irish one) are excellent.

Tell a lie...

I remember Arthur having to leg it from some Celtic fans that wanted to kill him in a bar.

Thought it was probably time to leave when one of them took his shirt off and had IRA tattooed across his chest. Your mate who I was with at the time was so pissed he completely missed all of this and didn't have a clue why we had to leave and rapidly.

Until very recently I had an office in Amsterdam so was probably out there 4 or 5 times a year. It's got very expensive of late, if you drink the main touristy parts you'll be paying €6.5 for a beer. If you go off the beaten track a bit you can probably drink for €5 a beer. The red light area has got smaller over the years but is still very apparent. Think you can still just about buy weed from coffee shops but they are banning it soon for non residents. Still plenty of shady looking chaps hanging about by the canals if you are looking for something stronger.

Haven't been out and about in Amsterdam but if you were looking for something to do during the day, the Amsterdam Arena tour was pretty good.....remember it being pretty cheap too and just paid on the day. Plus a good reason to give the missus as to why you chose there!!!!

I am actually sat in schipoll airport now on the way home. Red light district is definitely still there - well it was at 3 am this morning and the coffees shops were welcoming. If music is your thing there are some great clubs too.

I was here for work this time (well not last night!) and have been on loads of stag do's here and always had a great time.
