Can anyone recommend some decent Amsterdam pubs? Good beer selection, possibly showing some football...

And anywhere for a decent breakfast?

Heading there at the end of next month. Cheers :bigwave:

Teasers for the football, about ten screens showing all sorts of games at same time. food is OK. beer is... commercial. view may be interupted by scantily clad ladies dancing on the bar from time to time.

as i recall beer selection and tv dont go togther much there either, one or other usually.

The Amsterdam pub in Shoreham had a re-fit last year. Looks pretty good now and the food is also highly recommended. Not sure about showing the footie.

Even though I am not a big rock or metal fan, a few of NSCs finest always drink in Excaliber. Crackin pub right near the red light area that does loads of offers on beers. Friendly crowd and owner and they often show football up on the screens.

For football in or around the red light district. For beer head away from the RLD. Museum Quarter has some good bars for beer.

Have some bitterballen....you can thank me when you get back.

In the lowlands..
I recommend a couple of breweries for decent local beer. De Prael Brouwerij near the red light district is great. You should also head over to Brouwerij het Ij in East (get a tasting selection), but be aware that it closes at 8. If you're in the Jordaan and really like your beers, go to Arendsnest which has about loads of different dutch / belgian beers.

None of those have football on though. Football is shown in loads of places, although proper dutch pubs will probably prioritise Eredivisie. I tend to go to an irish pub (o'Donnells).

If it's not tipping it down, get bikes and cycle around. Don't spend the entire trip in the centre. And definitely get some bitterballen.

-> Cafe Eijlders <- became my most recent favourite bar in Amsterdam, spent a fair few hours in there drinking fantastic Belgium beer. One word of warning though, however drunk you get, don't go dancing on the edges of canals, I had to be dragged out of one!

Sorry, but that looks utterly shite.

Loads of good beer bars in the centre. Just avoid all the ones with crowds of bored looking British tourists outside drinking pints of Heineken (no locals ever drink pints - the beer warms up too quickly).

By and large the advice above "avoid the RLD" for decent beer is a good call, with one major exception: De Prael's brewery tap (https://www.deprael.nl/en_GB/brewpub/ - the Oudezijds location is the one you want). It's personal choice but their beers are arguably better than 't IJ's (mentioned above) and the location is much easier to reach. For other decent bars 'sort of' in the RLD, the top (station) end of Zeedijk is a good place to look, as is Nieuwmarkt (the other end of Zeedijk).

For serious beer, four superb places within a few minutes walk of Dam square are In De Wildeman (http://www.indewildeman.nl/index.php?lang=en), Arendsnest (http://www.arendsnest.nl/)*, Beer Temple (http://beertemple.nl/) and Gollem Raamsteeg (https://cafegollem.nl/ - all four Gollems are good, Amstelstraat has the best beer, but this is the most central one). Plenty more where that came from.

This is a pretty good place to look for ideas: https://www.booksaboutbeer.com/products/around-amsterdam-in-80-beers

None of them will show football though. Of the 300 or so Amsterdam bars I'm familiar with, I know only one that will show English football and has a half-decent beer menu (normally it's either/or) - Café Batavia (http://www.cafebatavia.nl/), which is handily right outside Centraal Station (if you walk out of the station and look left you can see it).

*Weirdly, I'm friends with at least 6 people in that photo on the Arendsnest's homepage...

There are some fantastic beer bars in Amsterdam, including in the city centre. The ones with the best beer selection are mostly small, tucked down side streets and won't be showing the football.Top pick after coming out of the station or wandering the Damrak is In de Wildeman. No visit to Amsterdam is complete without it if your a beer lover. It's on Kolksteeg, just off Nieuwendijk.
In de Wildeman

For locally brewed beer in the centre, the De Prael brewery. Oudezijds Armsteeg 26
De Prael Brewery

The largest selection is just on the west side of the City centre at the Arendsnest on Herengracht with one of the longest bars i've seen effectively making a beer corridor sort of layout
Arendsnest

The only thing that Rodney Thomas got right in his post was that you definitely need to get the tram out of the centre to visit the Brouwerij 't IJ the main small brewery in the city. You'll recognise it by the enormous windmill. You'll also find their great IJ IPA served all over town in bottles on draught, but come here early after 2pm opening before it fills up for the full range and also their top notch ossenwurst which is not for the faint hearted.
IJ Brewery

The bar next door langendijk is also decent.

More recommendations on the south of the city centre are
Cafe Gollem Raamsteeg
Hoppe at Spul 18-20
or Cafe Gollem Amstelstraat

That looks excellent. I'm going in April so will be checking that out.

Beaten to it by too long in the edit, I see but I will certainly second Trufflehound 's expert opinions.

I was going to post calling Trufflehound.

Arendsnest is a lovely place. Mainly, or possibly all, Dutch beers.
