I think the new building is average and imo they have lost a prominent position..

i don't know, you can see that new building from all over brighton and the design is very striking, how it got past the nimbys i have no idea. I wish that Ghery building at the king alfred was going to be built, would have been an icon.

A modern glass green house opposite some flats built in the 1930's - i think the original, like or not was instantly recognisable - we will have to wait and see what will replace it i suppose..

always was the plan. There will be a new road built too.

The 'new road' I believe is the reinstatement of an ancient thoroughfare that existed through the site at some time in the past according to historic records. I thought this was going to be pedestrian rather than for vehicles but could be wrong.

Cool, thanks. Worked at Amex for 6 months some time back, didn't know they were replacing the cake.

I worked there for 18 months, the social club out the back used to be quality - well subsidised and well used Fridays after work.

Mighell Street?? The road seems to have been cut in half by Amex house. It ended at the Sports and social club car park before the new build started.

The new building looks shit and nothing like the picture posted earlier. This may change when it opens but I doubt it.

15 years I have been at Amex, off and on. I keep leaving but also keep going back - 4th time back currently!

I think the new building looks alright. Certainly better than that ugly old wedding cake and I'll be glad when they tear it down. But are Amex actually getting anymore office space out of all this? Or is it just a case of modernising?

As I understand it, it isn't just Amex House that's going, but they'll also be vacating the grotty building on the other side of Edward Street. And what about Prestamex House up by Preston Park? Are they keeping that or is everything being shovelled into the new site?

Sounds to me like they're preparing for a smaller workforce on just the one site. These rumours about more outsourcing aren't going away.

No one's been in Prestamex for years. Its leased out to some insurance company I think.

I think the floorspace in the new building is higher than the existing one. It can accommodate both Edward Street offices and more.

According to the website from which I obtained that image, the new building will hold 10% more than the current building holds.

The architect's statement reads...

The site is on the steep hill between the town centre to the south and the late Victorian housing to the north and east. It is close to the Pavilion Gardens, and on the edge of the Carlton Hill Conservation Area. The current Amex building sits in the middle of the site - a generic 1970s office building which significantly detracts from the setting of the Pavilion and Conservation Area.

The brief from American Express was to replace their current 1970s offices on the site in the centre of Brighton. We helped develop the brief with Amex and Brighton city council, which included developing a masterplan for the wider site. The masterplan creates a new commercial quarter for the City. We have re-introduced old streets helping integrate the scheme into the wider public realm. At the centre of the site is a new square which creates a new address for the commercial buildings, eventually including the new Amex House which will be entered from the western elevation until the existing building is demolished. The scheme was developed with extensive use of models to explore the 3 dimensional impact of the proposals on this steeply sloping site.

Our proposal for the New Amex House helps mend the fragmented setting around the site. The design draws inspiration from the local and wider Brighton context, creating a complex, sinuous and colourful building. Our appointment includes the base build Cat A and Cat B works for the whole building, which includes general office areas, cafe, 8th floor restaurant and conference suites.

The internal spaces are designed to provide a welcoming work environment, with an emphasis on variety, light, external view and colour.

Seems likely it would be Mighell Street, looking on Google maps I can't see that it would be anything else...

edit: Post by TLO suggests more than 1 'old' street, so I don't really know exactly what these are, presumably Mighell street is definitely one.

Amex House really isn't fit for purpose anymore. All of Amex' UK buildings are being upgraded to a certain spec, and when they started doing the 7th & 8th floors here, they come up against all kinds of structural problems they weren't anticipating, which is why the new building has gone up (and Amex will own it, which they don't completely currently).

Somebody also asked how they got the building pass the NIMBY's. Here's how: By reminding B&HCC that the largest employer in the city is free to look at sites anywhere in the country. You'd be surprised how that can focus city planners minds.

To be fair, it's not the planners who make these larger planning decisions, it's the planning committee made up of 12 very wise, very diligent, very honest councillors.
