Put 50 p on the GOP retaining a majority in the upper house. At 6/5, I thought it was worth a flutter.

Never underestimate the power of the silent majority when they get to the voting booth.
More to do with the fact that only 1/3rd of the Senate is up for re-election anyway ( staggered 6 year terms for senators ) and the majority of that 1/3rd are currently Democrats as is. So the Democrats have a lot to do just to stand still in the upper house.

Split is currently 49/51 in favour of the Republicans. Democrats therefore need to win two extra seats. There are 35 seats up for grabs of which the Democrats currently have 25 so they need to retain those and win the two extra. According to this website, they are safe in 16, likely in 6 and there are 5 where it is a toss up. They would need to win all of those to turn the house.

https://www.270towin.com/2018-senate-election/

As for the House of Representatives, all 435 seats are up for grabs and polls suggest a win for the Democrats.

This week could be Trumps worst nightmare. Here's hoping.

I look forward to the bleating when the GOP retain both the house and senate.

I think pretty much everyone agrees they will hold the senate - would be pretty shocking if they didn't given which seats are up and which aren't, would take a humungous shift towards blue.

Looking unlikely to hold the house currently though, what info do you have?

Regardless of the outcome voter turnout looks like like it will be pretty high - this queue was in New York this morning, went right round the block. Saw others like this on my way to work. Have to say I was quite impressed. A lot of millennials there as well - a lot of whom had previously said they wouldn't be voting. Seems people are energized. Weather is also pretty shitty at the minute but doesn't seem to be having too much effect.

Had to laugh at some of Trump's rhetoric regarding the democrats, " radical socialism " was a corker. Does any American really think that Democrats are reds under the bed ?

Hopefully the racist ego has helped make America great again by his obnoxious attacks on the majority. If not, I’ll do more than bleat.

The door to a Democratic-controlled Senate slammed shut. Donald Trump will continue to have a Republican majority ready and willing to confirm his executive and judicial appointments.

The only question now is the size of his party’s advantage.

In the House of Representatives, however, the story is different.

The path of least resistance for Democrats to a majority in that chamber led through educated suburban districts that had long voted for Republicans, but contained voters that may have been uneasy with Donald Trump’s policies and rhetoric.

One by one, those districts were carried by the Democrats. In Virginia, Illinois and Florida, moderate Republicans lost. In places like Colorado, New Jersey, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Texas and New York, Democrats are poised for victory.

It won’t feel like the tsunami many on the left were hoping for, but a steadily rising tide is still lifting Democrats to enough victories to give them control of the House for the first time in eight years.

With that comes the ability to stop the Trump legislative agenda in its tracks and puts some teeth in congressional oversight of his administration.

The partisan trenches in America are getting deeper. And after two years in the darkness, Democrats have the means to fight back.

Plenty of Trump supporters would I imagine because they believe his lies.

Radical socialism is boarding on communism!

The democrats are further to the right than our tories, some were extremely uncomfortable when Obama brought in free healthcare to the poorest & most vulnerable in society.

So what do you guys reckon the Democrats are gonna try to impeach him on? They have an extensive number of options to be sure.

It will be a waste of time for the Dems trying to impeach Trump with no control in the Senate. Trumps power has been tempered though, he will be now held to account

America looks as divided as ever with the educated going for Dems and those not going for Trump

The juiciest charge would be treason - not impossible if there’s any truth in the Russian meddling accusations, which are now much more likely to be rigorously investigated by a House Committee. However, the chances of the Senate finding him guilty are as close to zero as makes no difference - a supermajority is required to convict. Thus any impeachment process would, imo, be simply posturing. The House would be better off focusing on resisting Trump’s legislative agenda if they want to frustrate his Presidency imo.

He may not. Early voting polling is starting to show a true swing to the Dems in states where Trump did well in 2016 such as Florida, Missouri, etc.

Dear oh dear........after all these years and the happenings in 2016, you are still taking notice of opinion polls!!!!!!
They should be confined to the dustbin of irrelevance where they belong.
