Steve Gibson, the Boro chairman, in a rare interview or statement recently apologised to their fans for their approach to the PL season. They were cautious in the transfer market. Burnley second time around spent a lot more and survived. In the brutal PL, it's all about squad quality and that takes serious money.

Boro signed 9 players last summer including the 100K a week loanee Negredo and then a fortune in January on Gestede and Bamford, arguably not up to it.
Gibson's problem was not sacking Karanka last summer, not getting his cheque book out . He did.

I really don't see Huddersfield even getting close to staying up this season.
Mind you: at the moment we're on course to head the same way.

One HT fan expects them to sign Mooy and (Tom) Ince as well as Mounie. Already done deals?

Last season Huddersfield completed most of their transfers by the beginning of July when they were officially announced.

Also linked with Danny Williams, Patrick Roberts and Kasey Palmer.

Even if they got those they will still need a central defender and a goalkeeper!

There's a clear correlation between spending, squad quality and survival, as we'd expect.

January spending is invariably rushed, too late and desparate buying clubs get ripped off. Unless the buyer is Sam Allerdyce who does seem to be bloody good at it.

The Boro Chairman apologised in May, not just regarding Karanka, but admitting their need to rebuild with pace and flair.

Unfortunately we'll have to wait until March 2018, when the 20 PL clubs in season 2016/17 have all filed their accounts with Companies House. I don't think Boro were overspenders in that area too, as Gibson recently said that they are in a great financial position for the Championship. Which is often NOT the case for relegated parachute monied clubs, who go down with huge payrolls (QPR, Villa, Sunderland, etc).

Not sure it is a clear as you make out. In the previous season, Aston Villa were 6th highest spenders with £50m, Newcastle 7th with £49m and (to be fair) Norwich 20th with £7m (see https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...eague-transfer-window-summer-2015-interactive). There will be SOME correlation (as there is in Championship) but it is not as close as might be thought. I read somewhere that there is an almost perfect correlation between wages and League position though.

Exactly - that's the rub. David Jones says in the interview on another thread that Albion aim for a small surplus in 17/18, which seems to give sensible leeway to be able to poach a couple of good players using parachute monies for 18/19 if we are relegated.

We are going to,have to in order to compete...CM will cost upwards of 10 million....a striker of any quality will be upwards of 10-15 million....and these are the cheaper ones!

Huddersfield are no wealthier than us, in fact our underlying income is far greater than theirs.

If they think they need to invest to stay up and the Albion are able to match them every step of the way on spending, perhaps we need to, to have any chance of staying up.

It will be so disappointing to have eventually got to the Premier League if we don't go for it to stay there. I am always worried that we are a bit shite at attracting quality forwards. Luckily both Zamora and Murray really wanted to come here, I wonder if anyone is going to be quite so keen this year.

To be this year's Hull, Sunderland or Boro will be gutting. I won't care too much if we go down having had a proper go at it but if we are going to try and be cute in the transfer market and bore the pants off the fans by not being able to score goals I'll be glad to return to the Championship.

Being a shit boring team in the Premier League is not a lot of fun. Lets' make sure we are entertained and get the crowd behind the team for 75 mins a game
