Has anyone got the Echo Auto?

Is it worth getting?
I live a gadget, so I’m quite interested in one of them, I’ve got a couple of Alexas at home, and Amazon music.

Are the NSC coughers getting low. Bozza on all out sell mode.
PS I've 4 Alexa gadgets, 6 Blink cameras (viewable on the Show), over 12 switches and about 50 Hue lamps. Think I've enough.

I have an Echo in the living room and one in the bedroom as well as a dot in the kitchen. I find them most useful for controlling WiFi lighting, got several WiFi bulbs and a couple of motion sensors for hall and kitchen. Lights can be set to timers, they're dimmable etc. Also you can play music on all devices at the same time and they are pretty good for music.

Wouldn't be without mine now.

I thought about getting one then saw that they have to work off your phone, i.e use your data. That's fine if you have unlimited but I don't. The Alexa app on your phone would do the same job but the downside is you can't unlock your phone and use it while driving of course.

They work off wifi, use the app on your phone to set it up, or use the app in it's own right.

But it's still using your data allowance if it's connected to your phone with WiFi isn't it?

No. It connects to your home WiFi alone.

Edit: in the same way as a laptop, an iPad, an xBox or PS4 etc.

How does it work off your home WiFi it's in the car? Am I being dense :lolol:

From the site:
Echo Auto connects to Alexa through the Alexa app on your phone and uses your existing smartphone data plan for connectivity and other features. Mobile network provider data and calling charges may apply.

If you wanted to get an older relative a reliable tablet then this would be ideal. Great price for what you get.

I briefly owned a Fire HD8 2018 (previous generation to this, I think, but not significantly different in specs) and found it a dramatically awful experience. Always sluggish, even with basic browsing or video playing, riddled with adverts, awful user interface and a terrible display - 1280 * 800, it's like Minecraft...

I switched to an (admittedly twice as expensive) Android tablet an never looked back.

Oh, sorry - I thought we were talking about the Dot.

Yes, the Auto would bluetooth to your phone and use your phone data plan.

Is that really an issue though - do people really "run out" of data nowadays, unless streaming massive quantities of video away from home.

Depends on your data allowance I guess. I could always stop being a tight arse and increase it...

I have one and use it off my mobile’s unlimited data plan.
Love it. Absolutely love it.

I’m a playlist nut so it’s good for that reason, but I like that I can just ask her to play random internet/dab radio stns that I like too.
Plus if I’m in the car and just really fancy listening to a particular song, it’s a simple request away.
