Maybe the Pompey fans are staying away because they're sick of that bloke with the bell (most likely sick of the smell of him, from what I've heard).

The bugger turned up 'on canvas' in a National Portrait Gallery exhibition the other month, would you believe....

Sunderland and the aforementioned WBA have excellent (ie noisy) support too and bigger fanbases....both areas are footy mad.

Pompey's fans ARE noisy but less abundant in numbers.

That bloke with the bell is John ( Portsmouth. F.C ) Westwood ( top hat, blue wig etc )and he has a sidekick with a drum. For a number of seasons they were positioned at the back of the home end , behind the goal. Pompey fans always complained about them ( home and away ) and eventually the club built a special platform for them, attached to the end of one stand.
The band now ' perform ' from that location and cause much less hassle to fans.
I remember a few seasons back when Pompey came to Withdean, he rang that bloody bell for the whole 90 minutes!
