A poem full if inspiration and hope. Shame it won't make a blind bit of difference.

An unusual topic for this hallowed forum and it may disappear as soon as it starts. I have never listened so intently and enjoyed the work of a poet as much as this inspirational and inspired choice by Joe Biden as Inaugural Poet Laureate. I include Attilla and Spike Milligan in this list, so not to be taken lightly. Seriously, I have never been so moved by a poet and I will be following her career closely. Sublimely and beautifully eloquent for one so young and fully half of it was written on January 6th after the riots on Capitol Hill. Wonderful.

Beautifully delivered and truly magical poem, it was a real privilege to be able to watch it live.

Lady G was exceptional too.

Reminded me of the type of English Literature homework at school that I always struggled with.

"Explain the meaning of every phrase in this poem".

Most of it went over my head, but the the sentiments and delivery were wonderful.

Rather than being cynical perhaps we should all get a crumb of optimism from a young black woman delivering a message of hope over hate.

A commendable view, but the cynicism some adopt is not without foundation.

In the 80s I attended numerous concerts/meetings etc as part of the Young Socialists in The Basement and alike.

Billy Bragg, Faith Brothers and Michelle Shocked seemed regular gigs, Porky the Poet helping along. Fists in the air, right on. Brilliant, brilliant times.

40 years on, were still having the same discussions (often heated), disagreements and displaying of ideals. I'm not saying we should criticise the effort nor the intent, but one cannot help get the feeling that, 40 years down the line, we'll be in a similar boat. Part of democracy surely allows such a view without the fear of being berated or compared to a character from It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

Plus ça change.

The poet and singers were all good but the most important thing is the new man in charge . Is he a decent person . The very early signs are so much more hopeful than the previous president.

I presume you didn't listen. It was neither, sentimental, greasy (?) nor Hollywood. However, it was beautiful, eloquent and inspired. I loved it. A new talent on the block.

I agree.

Knocked spots of the young Swedish girl who speaks out on climate change who tends to sound like her speeches have been written by Germaine Greer.

Girman's speech was delivered with sincerity in contrast to anger that seems to accompany the Swedish girl when she speaks and who seems to be operated by battery.

Rather insensitive, Noo. Presumably, you're aware that Greta Thunberg has Asperger's? Added to that she's just 18 and speaking a foreign language.

I wasn't intentionally being insensitive towards her.

I just find the wording and the aggression in her speeches not in keeping with such a young girl.

I actually didn't know she had Asberger's so am apologetic if people found my post offensive in that regard. My gripe was more to do with the fact that whe someone comes across to me personally as " over aggressive" I tend to find that the message gets lost . And that's just a personal feeling I have about how to get a message across and not at the person themselves per say.
