My own opinion is that there has to be something wrong with him if, as a 30 year old man, he is "in love" with a 15 year old girl.

Regardless of the age argument (not that I believe there is one, she's 15), he was her teacher. That's an immense breach of trust.

Yes it is but it is illegal for a teacher to have a relationship with a pupil under 18. In fact I am not sure what the rule is for over 18, I assume a uni lecturer cannot have a relationship with a student.

It is. However, for any person in a position of responsibility over a 16-17 year old - eg teacher or sports coach - it is still a crime to engage in any type of sexual relationship with them, and is usually punishable by a prison sentence and being put on the sexual offenders' register.

I'm fairly sure that that's fine. You have to draw the line somewhere, and 18 seems appropriate enough.
It is unless one party is in a position of influence/power over the other in which case it raises to 18, at least I think that's what it is.
Irrespective of emotion his actions are illegal and a paedophile is anyone engaging in sexual activities with someone under the age of legal consent.
On the emotional side I have a 14 year old niece and ,even if she thought she was in control & new what she was doing, if any 30 year old adult started a "relationship" with her, teacher or not, I'd sincerely hope my brother would chop his nuts off. I think it would be a very likely outcome
