I am meant to be visiting our backwards buddies down under later this year but I am shit-scared of all the hideous spiders out there you have to deal with.

I appreciate that they aren't literally everywhere but the very thought of just seeing a Funnelweb for real makes me think I would probably just collapse of shock.

I feel like such a f***ing GIRL but I have had this irrational fear of spiders since I was a kid.

Oz has such a great climate and sounds like an incredible place to visit, there is so much I want to do there. But I'll be buggered if I want to check my sheets every night to make sure I don't die horribly, or check under the toilet seat every time I take a dump in case some heinous spider bastard wants to eat my arse.

Just the very thought of it makes my hair stand on end.

What the f*** do I do?

Does this fear extend to all spiders, or just the small venomous variety?

What is it that frightens you about them exactly?

It's pretty much all spiders I'm afraid.

Puny little house spiders get me on edge and require Mr Henry hoover to pay a visit.

Although I am less worried by spindly legged sorts and daddy long legs'

I ask because it just so happens that I keep tarantulas. I have three at the moment.

A mate of mine is very, very frightened of spiders - it is a real phobia with him, and he's really embarrassed by it. But, over the last year or so, he has slowly but surely been conquering his fear mainly by learning more about them.

Previously he couldn't stand to be in the same room as a spider, but now he has reached the point where he can hold a tarantula's shed skin and he has also been able to remove a couple for spiders from his house - something his wife used to have to do for him. He hasn't got to the stage where he can hold one of my girls in his hand yet, but he's not far away.

The first step I took was to get him to read a book about spiders. Even that was difficult, as he could barely bring himself to look at pictures of them to begin with. But he managed it after a while. Perhaps you should try that.

Yeah that sounds like me. I've still never even watched Arachnophobia all the way through - it's that bad!

Certainly couldn't go near a tarantula's skin, in fact I'd have difficulty sharing a room with one.

It embarrasses me to be honest as whilst in Oz you may have something to fear with them, over here there is little reason to fear the little fly munchers and yet they reduce me to a cold sweat if I see one.

I wonder of hypnotherapy is any good for this sort of thing

Methinks Bluejuice should pay LB a visit to try and cure his phobia before hopping on that plane.

Can't say that spiders bother me, certainly the types we find in Britain are more than welcome in my home as they keep out flies and smaller insects, not so sure about larger ones like Tarantulas, funell webs or black widows though...

I would forgive any spider that scored goals regularly for the Albion

What enjoyment do you get out of keeping spiders?! What do they do exactly?!

I have sympathy for anyone who hates them, I have a phobia, they make me feel sick and I want to cry if I see one in the house.

One took the liberty of crawling on to my bed recently while I was in it, luckily I was on the phone and saw it right away but it got in between the duvet cover. I made so much noise I woke the kids up and burst Mrs Pethicks eardrums on the other end of the phone (she thought I was being attacked!)! It was huge, and I mean huge, my 14 year old even took a pic of it cos it was that big! Tank was playing v wolves that night and getting himself injured......when he rang to tell me that I said 'f*** your leg put your foot down and be quick about it' (nice arent I!!) When he got home it was like a military operation to suck the thing up the dyson! Even though it was dead I still wouldnt let him empty the contents into the bin, I made him go onto the bridle way at the back of the house and chuck it! I hate them that much that I wont even have a dead one in the bin!

What enjoyment do I get from keeping spiders? I don't know really. Started keeping them by accident (long story) but quickly became interested in them. And they are quite interesting, honest! Certainly more interesting than rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, mice, etc, anyway.

What do they do? Very little when they are in dormant mode, which is one of the joys of keeping them - they don't take much looking after once you know what you're doing. Feeding time is fun though!

Rosy, Myra and Mandy (the latter being named after a particularly venomous ex-girlfriend).
