Can anyone recall any other player giving our incredible left back such a torrid time as Miguel Almirón did last night?

Pervis is such an assured player, but last night he was seriously troubled by Almirón, and I can't recall any other player he has faced this year giving him such a hard time. Before the game, I'd have backed our man over 90 minutes, but he clearly lost the contest.

Didn’t help that Pervis looked absolutely dead on his feet from minute one, I think he’s another one struggling with the fixtures schedule, yes he’s a physical beast but we tend to see the best of him once a week, when was the last time he got a rest? Feel like he’s the only player aside from Dunk who hasn’t had a rest recently.

Nothing more complicated than fatigue I suspect. Pervis and Pascal have looked monsters of fitness but now like the rest of the team the amount of games, injuries and lack of squad depth are showing.

I think the issue with that is he is our only left back. At least Veltman and Lamptey can kinda fall back on Gross/Caicedo. Pervis has absolutely no one behind him and this has to be a priority in the summer.

I wonder how much of that was due to the pressure Newcastle put the entire defence under, with a midfielder as a make-shift right back, and a kid in only his second start. Dunk too busy protecting/supporting the player to his right resulted in the player to his left being more isolated. Mitoma I thought showed a lot more confidence v Arsenal than he has in a few games, so it was disappointing to see him seeming disappear for large parts of the game, not dropping back enough to support Estupinan. Our midfield were being bullied, and our forward line isolated.

Definitely down to fatigue that one. Pervis is an undroppable player whereas Almiron is in and out of the Newcastle team on a weekly basis.

Just to highlight my point since the start of last month this is his run of games + 120 minutes in the FA cup, I make that nearly 12 hours of football in about 3 weeks.

He probably is fit and strong enough but if as a side every time you could relieve a bit of pressure you give the ball away and you’re the outnumbered repeatedly - you’re not going to be able to do your job.

It was a perfect storm all over the pitch really first half. Newcastle targeted their overloads really well, even so, we rallied and looked more likely to get an equaliser, but in pushing for that took the sucker punch.

Going to put it down to a mixture of fatigue, nerves and the fact we were working with a makeshift defence.

We were continually giving the ball away in the first 30 minutes and there was no letup in pressure.

It was a sad sight seeing him skinned by Almiron and resulting in trying to pull him down and failing at that too.

Think he does need a rest as he's lost a few battles lately that he would had easily won earlier in the season. He's bombing forward a heck of a lot more than he did under Potter too, so his tank must be near the reserve limit.

We can't afford to rest him though, let's just get this season over the line!

This - fatigue was a massive factor for Pervis last night.

How often has he played left back?


Last season on transfermarkt shows me he played there twice last season. Once for 37 minutes in the opening game and the other in a 5-1 defeat to Fulham where he picked up a yellow. This season he played 11 minutes against Leeds at home.


Just because he 'can' play left back, doesn't mean he is comfortable there and I am guessing De Zerbi doesn't think so either.

If that was his choice you can only think it's because he might go to castle in the summer. Otherwise slightly worrying trend that players are just deciding they are too tired to play now or just deciding not to play at all!!
