I very rarely listen to their gubbins show anymore, and that showed me why this morning. As soon as Sam dismissed it as "money" they should have rolled out the interview with Fry last night when he said "it was 100% NOT about money."

Instead they just went along with it. Absolutely useless interviewing, no wonder I listen to podcasts in the car these days.

Unfortunately I think Allardyce confuses the word "football" with the words "not losing" and sets his sides up to do exactly that. This is not to say that he can't use good footballers or that his sides are entirely rigid tactically, but simply that they will tend to be very efficient and very organised with the emphasis on controlling the game in midfield. I remember seeing his Bolton side beat Birmingham 4-0 at St Andrews some years ago when they were under the cosh defensively for the whole game but kept the clean sheet and took every chance that they got. Goals aside it was an incredibly dull and boring game with little to thrill the senses (or indeed to stay awake for). That rather summed up his footballing style for me although in the Directors' Lounge afterwards he went beyond being brash and was frankly an arrogant arsehole. I've never like him since.

To say CMS came here "not for footballing reasons" sums up his understanding of what football is about and where he is at odds with many football fans who have watched and enjoyed the alternative, whether it was from Barcelona, from Arsenal. or from lowly Brighton. The West Ham fans are in for a very confusing time. They will enjoy winning more than they lose (it will certainly have a novelty appeal) but it will be largely at the cost of what little remains of their heritage of open and expansive football.

Remember that many of our own fans still want us to just kick the ball upfield and get frustrated by Gus' pass-it-from-the-back style. Many more - and especially our players - have learned to enjoy it. Hoskins and CMS have already said that our brand of football is exactly why they came here. They could just have easily said that it's why they won't go to play for certain other clubs/managers.

Err, I think that's exactly the reason he's signed for us. I suspect Poyet guaranteed him first team football, in fact probably (given that he's been quoted saying this) said that he'll build the team round him. At West Ham he may have not been guaranteed a first team spot and would have to fit around what they already have.

Having said that, Allardyce's excuse was laughable. I would have thought it's a given that we wouldn't be offering more than West Ham; in fact I would suspect from a money perspective that Leicester would have been the best move - much cheaper living costs there.

But bar Cole, who might leave, Hammers havent got any strikers now Keane, Demba Ba have gone. Pretty sure when selling the club, Allardyce would have told him hed be first choice as well. He'd have definitely started for them too.

I think the implication was that they couldn't back up what they'd promised, which sounded like the suggestion on here earlier that they couldn't pay enough of the fee "up front".

I don't understand why anyone takes any notice. He has his own and his clubs' agenda, he is hardly likely to say "we coudln't offer him what he wanted in football terms" or "we couldn't match the money", now is he.

Could be worse for West Ham fans, they could be in QPR's position.

Just been looking at one of their boards and it's carnage on there. Just promoted to the PL for the first time in years and you'd expect there to be excitement in the air. But the atmosphere is frankly despairing. Ticket prices have been increased massively for supporters, and they haven't signed anyone yet. Plus Taarabt is likely to quit as well, and they all seem, not without justification, to be expecting a series of spankings next season.

Plus Barry Fry has laid into their board, or at least Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore, for their lack of support for Neil Warnock so far, and opened a right hornet's nest.

Can't be doing with getting all cross about it to be honest. We're a much smaller club than West Ham, and until this season we have looked like a truly tin pot outfit for nearly 20 years. If Sam Allardyce thinks it's a money move, he's in agreement with about 90% of the footballing world.

It's going to take 20 years to build the club's reputation back to where we want it to be, but in all honesty it doesn't really matter does it?

Sure about that ? Does Upton Park have three times the capacity of The Amex ? (No its has a capacity of 35300). How many season tickets have they sold ? As far as I'm concerned they're a club in decline and the noises coming from the 'stars' David would indicate that they are still in a big financial muddle. We are a club who might be over reaching but we are definitely ambitious. Granted this is very unfamiliar ground to many here as we've not been like this since the late seventies.

From what I know of Gus and talking to him he would never, ever, guarantee someone first team football. What he probably did say to CMS is that if he keeps performing and working hard like he knows he is capable of, then he will earn the right to be first on the teamsheet. Nothing is a given with Gus, I'm certain of that.

He's not worth worrying about. Allardyce will be under huge pressure this season, and when you miss out on a player like that, you try and spin it. In this case, glossing over West Ham's embarrassing offer and susbsequent withdrawal of the offer.

For West Ham to be talking about money is laughable, the number of players they signed for stupid wages in the last five years that might have actually won something had they gone to other clubs for less.

Agree totally that the comment about 'can't be a footballing decision' should go on the dressing room wall tomorrow. He's just plain ignorant, and people like Barry Fry and their chairman, who arguably have more reason to be bitter, just know a lot more what is going on at Brighton.

The first task is to replicate what has happened in Southampton. Southampton is a similar sized city (only slightly bigger) with a similar sized catchment area, and when you walk around that city, *everybody* follows the local club. Here, there are too many fans of London clubs wandering around, and not just kids. These demographics will change, but only as the club sustains it's position in the top two divisions.

Yes, quite sure. I bet they've sold as many as we have, and there isn't the buzz about West Ham that there is about Albion and the shiny new stadium. Alternatively you could always check the attendance figures of the two clubs over the past 40 or 50 years - I bet we've beaten them in maybe 2 seasons max. Or you could check out the fact they're moving into a stadium that hold 60,000. Or you could see how many recent seasons they've averaged over 34,000 (about 96% of capacity). Or you could accept that they are the 4th biggest club in a city of 8 million people whereas our entire city only has around 300,000 people in it. And when we got to the play offs at Cardiff, they were dishing out one ticket per season ticket holder for their game against Palace, whereas we couldn't even fill our end.

I'm completely sure that West Ham have at least 3 times as many fans as we do at the moment.

Erm disagree..i think CMS would c Poyet as a far better manager to play for than tht twat Allardyce whos head seems to b stuk up his rectum most of the time...quite a lot of the ''football'' world wud c tht one too.
