It wasn’t always 3 points for a win, which is what this table is based on. Darwen, for example, are given 11 points more than they would have been awarded at the time.

Not a criticism of the table, just an observation.

This is great, so yes, lots of factors.

I do think though (and this could be some anchoring bias) that over the entire footballing pyramid there seems to be a shift to southern clubs. Looking at the non leagues for instance, feels like a lot of the clubs taken on by money men are more southerly clubs. Probably just an incorrect hot take though.
Although at the very highest level the leagues are mostly being won by Northern teams, and plenty of money is going in there. Newcastle, Villa and Forest are 'back' , Leeds, Sunderland and Birmingham could well be on their way back.

The southern teams doing well - us, Bournemouth, Brentford seem more like 'project clubs', seeing how far you can take unfashionable clubs without a lot of cash, by making them exceptionally well run. Reading and Swansea would have fallen into that bracket for a while, Ipswich & Luton possibly too. Can't think of many up north that that description fits, maybe Leicester.

Maybe that's the point, that there's more potential for investing in clubs down south where previously there was little investment

You see, this is why I'm a firm supporter of the 'Football only started in 1992' brigade. We're much higher up if you ignore all the early seasons, especially those when it was just a northern thing. :)

(Good to see Bradford Park Avenue though!)
It's bollocks though isn't it? I think you'll find it started in 2011.

The combined Div 1/Prem table is a couple of seasons out of date as the 389 games pld shown would be at the 31 game point of the 2022/23 season so a few more wins and points to be added to it. Still has us in 47th place but now on 459 games played in the top flight, 7 games behind Bradford, but still a long way off points wise as we have now amassed 520 so far to their 582.

Interestingly if the All Time Prem Table was points per game based we'd be in 17th place. With Brentford making a major jump up the table.

Isn't it more a reflection of:

1) The league originally being northern based

2) A lot of Southern clubs didn't join until 1920

3)Only two divisions until 1920 when divs 3 north and south were introduced

4)It was only one up one down from Div 3 south until 1959

5)It was only two up two down until the 70s.

6)Play offs weren't introduced until 1987.

I'd bet that the increase in top flight southern teams started in the 70s with three up three down and really got going after the play offs were introduced.

For example we didn't get promoted from div 3 south until we won it in 1958. If it was top 3 we would have been promoted in 1937. If the play offs existed we'd have qualified for them 17 times with our first possible promotion coming in 1923.

I think it's that greater mobility rather than any sociological or economic factors that have caused the 'rise' of southern teams and 'decline' of northern ones.

That, if true, is an incredible stat!
Yep, football didn't start in 1992 but football as it has been for many years didn't start in 1888 either. Shenanigans with re-elections and a northern bias. If I were to pick an arbitrary date then the 50s or 60s seems about right when things settled down. But even then there was re-election in Division 4.

That's brilliant!

Maybe my new favourite pointless football stat.
There was one up and one down between Div.3 north and Div.2 until 1959 too.
Yes, I know but that doesn't have any baring on the point I was making.

The football league was a predominantly northern based league and with only one southern team being promoted from the third tier each season it was difficult to get an influx of southern based teams into the higher echelons. Thus northern teams were able to have a long history in the top flight.

I haven't thought about it in terms of non league so I have no idea!

This is the all time Premier League table.
Will probably overtake Charlton, Wimbledon this season. And (probably) Sheff Weds, Norwich, Coventry next....so not far off breaking into the all time Top 20.
Forest should overtake us on current form. Slightly ironic that we are level on points but Albion ahead on GD.
