That is really bad practice.

No-one should EVER instruct motorists to break the Highway Code:-

96: Hazard warning lights. These may be used when your vehicle is stationary, to warn that it is temporarily obstructing traffic. Never use them as an excuse for dangerous or illegal parking. You MUST NOT use hazard warning lights whilst driving unless you are on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway and you need to warn drivers behind you of a hazard or obstruction ahead. Only use them for long enough to ensure that your warning has been observed.

Yep it's ridiculous, and frankly embarassing advice. Like every 1901 er we display the permit and yet they stop everyone to tell them where to park. As SuperPhil said it's nonsense and clearly badly training. As is the complete waste of space of about ten people waving at you where to go.

I'm told though there is a club statement about to be released on the whole saga though, so wait for the binfest when that comes out. As I expect it to be heavily on the ten or so drivers who abuse the stewards and less on the general farcical issue.

Interesting - I used to do work for the CAA and when you drive to the control tower at Bournemouth airport you have to put your hazard lights on when you cross the runway ( which in itself feels like you're playing chicken with planes !!!! ). Surely the highway code only applies to public land / highways though ?

There always used to be a sign at the entrance to the Sussex University site that pointed out that Road Traffic Law applied to the roads on the site. I think that is generally true of all private roads that are used by the public.

That's a side issue, though. The point is that motorists need to be able to predict what other drivers are intending to do. Compliance with the Highway Code is one of the ways that this is supported. If I have my hazard warning lights on, it means that my car is stationary.

Oh you have! It was WORSE than ever. I got in the car at 10.30 and the car didn't move until 11.30. Got back in Worthing after midnight. And tonight there wasn't even a steward in sight.

The whole thing is a complete joke. Not that I intend to but I would be totally embarrassed to take a corporate guest to that fiasco.

At least if you did take a corporate guest he would be able to use a lift in the West Stand to the middle tier, yet the elderly etc can't use the lift to the WSU, another fiasco

That's factually incorrect. The WSU was never marketed to those with mobility problems, they advised against it. Infact the club have said they'll move anyone affected to another part of the ground and advise such people to contact them immediately.

People were told not to get a ticket in the WSU if they had any mobility problems, so not a fiasco at all, in fact the lcub have even offered to relocate anyone have problems. 1901 was sold with the fact there is a lift available, so all in all, the club have been 100% up front about everything, and even been sympathetic to anyone stupid enough not to heed their advice, as well as offering a change for anyone whos circumstance has changed.

I agree with what you say regarding people's expectations about the getaway time. Just the rest of what you said seemed unreasonable. People have hosts of different reasons for wishing to drive and whilst the opportunity is there and we are still a free country, then people are entitled to make use of their cars.

okay - can I be allowed to say that my tolerance level of this topic is now wearing extremely thin? Lots of finger pointing at the club, stewards, car drivers, users of other sites on the brighton uni campus etc etc

Lord B has it about right, the car park is in the wrong location and there is no perfect solution. Those at least in their warm car have (generally) least complaints with regard to the whole situation, but somehow are being the noisiest.

Sums it up. Other than for players or VIP's, a big event (and it might be 30,000 next year) means more time before and after games for everyone. It's hard luck.

Perhaps in their minds-eye, 1901/BFers expected drive away at 16:55, home soon after, being VIPs.

If NOBODY used cars to get to games, the planet might feel it had had a pleasant Saturday afternoon, but there wouldn't be enough room on the trains, buses and coaches to get 22,000 people to and from the stadium. Speaking selfishly, I shall be using the train tomorrow. I will plan my travel times and not have to queue at either end.

That's a bit OTT as the public transport doesn't have the capacity to cope with ALL of the fans any more that the car parks do.

All parking (at any time) is banned on Village Way. The double yellow lines are backed up by cones. Blue badges don't provide an exemption.
