I'm sure that will be part of the discussion. I don't see how an unelected second chamber is deemed unacceptable but an unelected head of state is fine. I could certainly see a case for both being abolished.
Fingers crossed.

A thought for the brain dead apologists/far left loons that slavishly follow Corbyn .. if a majority of the HoL supported a Marxist/Socialist revolution he wouldn't have said anything ..

Are you capable of posting an opinion without slagging off somebody?

You need to read it.

And that's ignoring the vast influence they have on every day life. Prince Charles, for example, has no architectural qualifications but this doesn't stop him writing letters to Saudi princes asking them not to build their certain pre-approved buildings in London at a cost of hundreds of British jobs all because HE doesn't like their shape.

Self-categorised Undemocratic loon tries to hide in the far left Marxist supporting apologist crowd shock. My definition of undemocratic is exactly the same criteria as the Uk has used in all previous GE/referendum results. You are the Remain mirror image of N Farage .. :lolol:

Christ almighty, you've finally disappeared up your own bottom.

He talks to vegetables and wishes to be a tampon too. Lucky for him he isn't elected every 5 years for his life long position as ****.

Only two nations with unelected clerics in the quasi-democratic parliamentary system apparently - the UK of GB & NI and Iran!

Why not? The whole royal family would suddenly lose all their money and power

They are independently wealthy and have no real power at all. Where they have exercised it (to block private members bills) they have been lent on by Government.

Effectively they are paid to stay in place to have no power.

Shocking isn't it.

As is Lords allowed to become cabinet members, much exploited by Tony Blair.

Can't get your chosen cabinet minister one to get elected as MP ? No worries, just stick them in the Lords and invite them back in.

Possibly 'you' can't .... just one of your many unfortunate failings.

MEMO TO ALL FELLOW POSTERS.

JCFG has announced this evening that I have been living up his bottom for the past two years. Apparently it's because of one of my 'failings' that I don't know what he is talking about. Is there anyone else on here who can provide an explanation?

Debates around whether we should 1) Abolish the monarchy 2) Make the House of Lords elected are a bit of a red herring and are not that useful to be honest.

Neither are really likely to happen in a very conservative (with a small c) country very quickly and unfortunately the arguments mask a number of other problems.

You can massively clean democracy up without resorting to either.

For instance

1) Don't allow anyone non elected to become part of the cabinet.

2) Don't allow Government to pressure the Monarch to stop a bill being debated in Parliament they don't like.

3) Abolish the Privy Council.

4) Remove the clergy from the House of Lords.

Clearly you don't understand politics.

One - he's not a communist. He's a democratic socialist. Big difference.

Two - he's advocating abolition of the House of Lords - an unelected second house. Many on all sides of the political spectrum agree with that, and feel it should be an elected second house.

Just scrolling through this thread again. I hope I remembered to remind you that there is no point discussing anything with the prancing ninny. Acres of anti labour bollocks, and if you argue with him he calls you an idiot/communist/traitor. We all have political preferences and we may be inclined to reveal them, but that's quite different from constant 24-7 campaigning. I suspect he may have an agnda

Oh dear. Well, I blocked him some time ago so I am mercifully unmolsted by his old bollocks, but you could report him to a mod and see if he might be banned. Its probably time.

It's all very well talking about the abolition of the Lords but what are they going to put in its place? We're surely not going to have a unicameral system.

A senate, something like Australia or Canada have in conjunction with the Westminster System.

Actually opens up opportunities for independent politicians or smaller parties to become involved in keeping Governments in check.

Yeah, but I was thinking more how it would be elected? A form of PR or FPTP (and, if so, how would it be defined?).

If PR, what form? Party list? STV? MMP?

Personally, I wouldn't have elections at all. I'd go back to the ancient Greeks and have a senate chosen by ballot. You pick the names of 50,say, men and 50 women at random and they would be our second chamber for two years. I'd modify it so that anyone who has held elected office or is a party official would not be eligible to stand.

I'd temper that by having something like 20% additional members chosen by Parliament - this would be all-party selection so not crammed with government placeholders - and would provide various levels of expertise; there'd be scientists, lawyers and senior civil servants, for example. But they'd always be a minority within the senate.

That would be genuinely independent second chamber.
