The homophobic chanting thread has shown how what some see as humour, others can find offensive, ‘We can see you holding hands’ in this instance.

Now from the forward thinking woke capital of the world (not) come the news that the Famous Five books by Enid Blyton are to be updated to avoid causing offence. Phrases such as ‘shut up’ and ‘you idiot’ are to be removed to reflect more modern thinking. Here is a link to follow https://www.2gb.com/woke-warriors-strike-again-enid-blyton-books-to-be-changed/

I really cannot get my head around this one. God help the human race.

Woke warriors or shrewd marketeers? As was pointed out during the Roald Dahl controversy, the books get a huge burst of free publicity and there are now 2 different versions to buy. Those offended by this sort of stuff purchase the new set adapted for modern tastes. Simultaneously the publishers have motivated others to go out and buy the “originals” all over again for their kids/grandchildren. Like most of this stuff, blown out of all proportion.

Is this news in 2023?

The books were revised in 2010....

The revised books didn't sell well, so were returned to their original form in 2016...

Takes a while for news to filter down to Melbourne though. It's no wonder the OP doesn't really understand outrage when it's taken 13 years for news of the thing he's outraged about to finally hit the deep south of the southern hemisphere.

When I went to Adelaide and Perth in 2013 they still had Benny Hill on every morning, so as you say clearly things do take a little time to filter Down Under 😂

Oh look, GB taking a mocking tone, how novel. Funnily enough this was on the TV breakfast news this morning so it either has taken 16 years to get here, or there is another update occurring. No doubt you will have the answer, or will claim to know better. BTW, not outraged, just bewildered.

Perhaps the publishers saw what the outrage and horror did for the sales of Dahl's books and thought they wanted some of that.

I suspect that the arguments for and against this will be very similar to that thread so I am going to read it and save myself some time.

Although some of Dahl's stuff was even questioned at the time.

I don't think altering some words in old publications is a bad thing really. As long as it doesn't impact the storyline. And I'm really thinking about kids books here. It falls inside my outrage benchmark. But some publications should sit in history as they were, a reflection of the times and better uncut. Mark Twain springs to mind.

We don't have the Black & White Minstrel Show for good reason. Although hands off Fawlty Towers.

Even more so than the Roald Dahl updates I struggling to see why this is an issue for a football forum populated my middle aged men. Hand on heart when was the last time any of us read a famous five book?

They were shite when we were kids and they are even worse now.

Full disclosure I think I read the faraway tree to my daughter 10 years ago. Which is better than the famous five but still pretty shit.

Editing the language isn't going to make any difference toy enjoyment, or lack thereof, of famous five books.

I will leave the pitch forks and outrage to the Blyton Stan Club.

TL: DR I don't give a shit.

Funnily enough I'm reading them now with my daughter, having just blasted through the entire Secret Seven. I actually don't mind them, especially compared to the rest of Blytons utter doggerel. At least there's a mystery of sorts.

Buy your main point of - why would anyone wring their wet knickers out on  this forum - is absolutely correct of course.

I can only laugh at the intolerance shown on here at times. Talk of outrage, pitchforks, end of the world, knicker wetting. I was just pointing out how sensitive some souls seem to have become these days. Seems the knitting club are out in force right now, must be Ovaltine time for you all soon.

Oh come on now you can't include all those out of context exclamations of intolerance and outrage and leave out your own 'god help the human race'. Sensitive souls indeed.

If we are playing hyperbole toptrumps you played a strong card to start with.

Mental isn’t it. Nanny state abd it’s bloody dangerous imo. You cannot erase history or edit it. People need to get a grip and see history and society for what it once was, not, bury their hands in the sand. Really annoys me. Lack of realism!!
